When I was in elementary school a couple of my friends were deaf so I started learning asl. Later on in middle school I started to dive deeper into the language. I’m autistic so verbal communication is not always easy for me. Even though verbal English is my first language (and I’m not completely fluent in asl), ASL feels more natural to me.

Hello everyone I am Cat! I am currently trying to educate myself on the language of ASL for a class project. This was also motivated by my graduate studies of becoming a Speech Language Pathologist. I am starting off with the basics including the alphabet and other signs we use daily such as saying hello, goodbye, please, thank you, etc. Language is beyond fascinating and with the range of clients I have I want to be able to encourage communication in modalities that work for each patient I work with. As a future SLP, this will allow me to work with clients that are hard of hearing and have limited usage of verbal communication. ASL can also be used with clients that have voice pathologies and aphasia which is a great tool for these populations. I am looking to see if anyone would recommend any resources or tips to aid me on this learning journey. I also would love to hear about others perspectives learning or using ASL.

Hi! I'm Demi. I have decided to pick up ASL because it seems very fascinating and interesting. I've been in the situation before where I meet someone who is deaf and have no idea how to communicate with them. After watching a short film on youtube about being deaf it made me want to learn ASL. I'm still really new, but I'd like to have a practice partner so I could work on my speed and reading skills.

I have had a passion for asl for a very long time. The main goal has always been to become an asl interpreter. I took a break from college and now I’d like to return to pursue my career with asl. I am in New York and none of my local colleges offer those courses that I need to take in person so now I’ve been trying to find something online but haven’t had much success with this either. If anyone has any colleges in mind (for online classes) that may help or even a different path to fulfill my dream I am all ears. If you took the time to read this I really appreciate it. ❤️

My mom and brother are hard of hearing.

Decades ago, the local school system offered SEE classes to family members of students that were receiving services.

Years later, I used baby signs with my children.

Now I want to learn ASL. Honestly for the first time since SEE and "baby sign" are not ASL. Sure, there are crossover signs, but that only gets one so far.

I also have occasional aphasia, so I'm hoping that learning ASL will do two things 1)offer me a resource when I get stuck and 2) help me recall when I get stuck.

i am learning just in case and i have found important stuff.

use asl sign fingerspell match game. listed below are the icons to get there with the android app. first then the memory game which is match game. then use this website that we are on for speed sign reading. what i need if anybody is listening is a speed signing program that uses a webcam to learn to sign back to people at high speed ok. that is what i am doing here. also a match to go with videos where you watch and choose a word or phrase in match game form would be good with these features. watch, pick then when you hover both light up with back lighting. then video will play again for viewing again. i am sure this way will teach perfect sign in a very short time.

I don't know anybody with whom I could communicate in ASL, but this does not stop me from being motivated about it.

I'd love to get in touch with some of you in order to support each other in the process.

Im learning asl because my wife and a few friends are deaf,

	(2) I am a firefighter and sign language is very handy in a noisy place.

I watch closely when meeting some patients and sign to then when i speak to them.

if they are deaf it makes it easier for me to pass on information when we are directing traffic at accident scenes.

sometimes patients are deaf and i may not know it but it helps us to communicate accurately with other non signers.

	(3) we have had multiple requests to teach asl in our department so my wife and i are organizing as much information as we can.

and (4) it is a lot of fun!

	Hi all!

So I am starting to look at learning ASL deeply and a question I have been wondering is if it is a language that crosses borders well? Like if I was to visit other countries I get it may not be the same sign language they use but it would be close enough to be able to communicate well? My research so far seems to go back and forth on this.

The reason I'm learning ASL is because I'm an advocate for communication. My major is Communication Disorders and Deaf Education. I work with children who are nonverbal and I teach baby sign to little ones. I want to learn more because it is important for everyone to have a voice whether or not they can be physically heard. I also joined an ASL group at my church but it's a mix of ASL and FSL (Filipino Sign Language) so some words might be different when I sign. I also met a girl from my church who lost her hearing and she inspired me to learn sign language. If anyone's willing to practice with me, I only took ASL 1 and that was about 2 years ago so I'm not very fluent so perhaps we can help each other. Shoot me a message on here!

I want to learn because I think it is a very amazing way that there is a language anybody can use without using their voice, not just that but it is fun, cool, and interesting to learn and do.

	1. I like to learn new things

I’ve learned how to fly, I’ve learned a good bit of Spanish, I’m a science nut and love reading about science and technology. I figured ASL would be something that would be good to learn as well!

	2. I want to meet new people and become involved with the Deaf community in my area

There is a whole community of people that I am detached from, simply because I lack the ability (knowledge) to communicate with them. That’s a shame, and I want to change that so I can meet new people and make new friends.

	3. It looks like a fun language

Two years ago, I was at a football game. There was a couple in front of me that was deaf. They were communicating the whole game without speaking a word, just using hands and face. I was mesmerized but hopefully did not stare. I had wished I could have joined in and at least introduced myself. Hopefully I will get that opportunity again with others in the future.

These may all seem like selfish reasons, but I’m just being honest.

I guess there is one other reason: I volunteer at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. I have the fun task of playing with kids (patients and siblings) in the waiting rooms to help make their visit hopefully a little more pleasant. My ability to speak some Spanish has come in quite handy!

St Jude has an audiology department, and I bet if I knew ASL, I could better interact with some of those Deaf/HH kids as well. The possibilities are endless!

I am learning sign language because I find the language itself to be very interesting. I love how you can have a whole conversation just using your hands. I became interested in ASL almost 2 years ago and began learning it myself. I am not fluent by a longshot and don't practice as often anymore. That's why I am here. Hopefully, I can start communicating with more deaf/HOH people and strengthen my skills in ASL. I've been having so much fun learning it and can't wait to talk to more people using sign!

As you all know, some schools go back virtually or online. My school being one of them, and the new girl is hard of hearing. We just became friends through social media, and I can tell she slightly ashamed of being hard of hearing. This is nothing to be ashamed of. I also know that her mom helps translate everything she signs or she types it into the chat area. I chose to learn sign so that I could communicate with her. I'm also doing this to lift a weight off of her mom. She has Emily (the girl I mentioned), and a 3 month old baby. I know this can be stressful so I chose to help her.

Apparently, the world of ASL has come straight for me. I recently moved, and both my neighbors on each side of my house are deaf. I had to youtube some basic signs of "Hello, Nice to meet you, How are you and etc" Just to have some conversation with them. If that was not an enough reason, I recently had a few patients come in that are deaf, and has been signing. Good thing I was able to learn some by then, and signed the basic greetings. I want to be able to communicate with my patients and my neighbors, as learning a new language will definitely add some points on a resume as well, but mainly to communicate and have a fun ordinary conversation with my neighbor and patients.
