Holiday Greeting

Recommended Posts

Hello! My name is Autumn and I am currently learning ASL (I have taken 4 semester through Gallaudet) and the college where I work is creating a holiday video greeting in a variety of languages and I would really like to have them include a greeting in American Sign Language since we have a number of alums who are Deaf and use ASL.  I know how to say basic greetings "Happy Holidays from Grinnell College" but the script they want is “May it always be the season … to embrace our differences … and celebrate global understanding. Happy holidays from Grinnell College.” This is more complicated than I know how to sign.  Would anyone be willing to help me figure out the most appropriate way to sign this sentiment?

Hey Autumn-

I'm also in my 4th semester of ASL (at Colorado State - so jealous you are going to my dream school!) I'd love to chat and discuss this, as I have a few ideas! 😄

The video recording is not working for me and it won't let me upload my own recording so let me know if you'd like to see this translation signed.

Let me know what you think of this translation: now, here, we dif-dif-dif embrace/love, world connections celebrate. Hope always stay. Happy Holidays... etc.

It's a little abstract but I think it demonstrates the conceptual/visual nature of ASL and conveys the message appropriately.

    • Hi, Jason! My name is Joy and I would love a pal to practice with!  I live in the great city of Austin, Texas and work as a teacher. I need to seriously improve my signing for my work. Although ideally, we would also have someone from the Deaf community with us, I am certain that there would be great value in the 2 of us signing together, novices we may be. Now I am going to attempt to record something like this in a video for you. Hope to hear from you soon... Joy Ok, guess who! So i went to record this (and I recorded a video the other day on this computer, so I know it works), and it told me that my camera and microphone were blocked and that I need to unblock them. But i cannot figure out how! Can you help?
    • Back in the 1990s I was a slam poet, and I've been told that my signing is particularly theatrical as a result. I know that the sign for THEATER is backwards pinwheeling of thumbs-up "A" hands in front of your chest; but is there a separate sign for THEATRICAL, or do I simply sign THEATER in an exaggerated way?
    • I just learned about Switched at Birth, and began watching it on Netflix this week. Have you seen that video of Sean Berdy signing the entire alphabet in four seconds? Pretty amazing.
