  1. I am learning BSL as part of my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. I am doing an introductory course on the British Sign Language website which I would strongly recommend to anyone, especially people doing DofE. It was very easy to find and start the course - it was one of the suggested skills (3 month) courses on the DofE website for the Bronze award. It cost £25 to enroll, but the experience I have had learning BSL on there was worth the money. I enjoy learning languages, and BSL has really interested me. Now I feel more confident around people to read the body and sign language.
  2. Hi I'm Wendy and I have only ever met one person from the Deaf community; it made me wish I knew how to communicate with him. I have always loved languages and would love to be fluent in BSL one day. It does feel strange and foreign though, like any new language does. I feel I need to build up a lot of courage before I post my little video of introducing myself in sign language!
  3. Hi, My name is Lee-Ann. I have decided to learn BSL because I am a teaching assistant and being in education, I feel this may be beneficial going forward. Should the need arise, it is handy to have the skills to communicate where necessary with BSL. I am enjoying the journey so far and look forward to taking it a lot further. Thank you so much!
  4. Hi! My name is Codie, I am 18 years old and I have started learning BSL. I am hoping to start university in September, where I will be moving from the countryside to the city to study a course which allows me to work with young children. In my work experience, I have come across children with a range of additional needs, including one boy who had never learned to speak, but was always listening and learning. Nobody in the school knew how to correctly communicate with him, meaning he was often subconsciously excluded by the other young children who found it difficult to be around him. Along with this, I work part time in retail and understand the importance of allowing people to be independent. Learning sign language would make my work place more accessible for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and increase the independence of some people in my area who find it difficult to be alone due to needing to communicate in non-verbal ways. Along with this, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has forced me to leave school early and caused a lot of uncertainty. Learning this new skill is not only beneficial to other people, but also to myself, as it allows me to feel like I'm achieving something, even if it is only minor like learning one or two new signs. I'm excited to see how the rest of my learning goes and what else I can achieve, and to see how BSL helps my day to day life.
  5. Hi all, My name is Angel and I am here to learn a new language and add to my skills. I am proficient in a few languages already, and BSL was one that I really wanted to learn as well. As wth all new languages, I find it so intersting as it comes with so many interesting facts. I am excited to continue on this wonderful journey. I am currently working at a privae medical practice in London's medical hub in Harley Street, and hopefully this new language will be useful for me in the future (and I am sure it will be). Anyway, I don't want to ramble on. x
