  1. Hi! My name is Codie, I am 18 years old and I have started learning BSL. I am hoping to start university in September, where I will be moving from the countryside to the city to study a course which allows me to work with young children. In my work experience, I have come across children with a range of additional needs, including one boy who had never learned to speak, but was always listening and learning. Nobody in the school knew how to correctly communicate with him, meaning he was often subconsciously excluded by the other young children who found it difficult to be around him. Along with this, I work part time in retail and understand the importance of allowing people to be independent. Learning sign language would make my work place more accessible for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and increase the independence of some people in my area who find it difficult to be alone due to needing to communicate in non-verbal ways. Along with this, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has forced me to leave school early and caused a lot of uncertainty. Learning this new skill is not only beneficial to other people, but also to myself, as it allows me to feel like I'm achieving something, even if it is only minor like learning one or two new signs. I'm excited to see how the rest of my learning goes and what else I can achieve, and to see how BSL helps my day to day life.
  2. Hi there! My name is Bethany, and like many of you, I have decided to take the plunge and begin learning BSL during this period of lockdown! I will be graduating this summer with a degree in Psychology and want to use this to start a career in teaching. One of my final year modules focused on Autism Spectrum Disorder, and confirmed to me that I want to work with SENDS children. So, in order to do that, and do it effectively, knowledge of BSL will be so valuable! I took some basic classes in primary school, as one of my classmates was deaf, so I have been able to fingerspell for years, but not much more! So, why not, as we have such an abundance of free time at the minute, use it productively and sign up for a BSL course? So far, so good! I am thoroughly enjoying this process and am really looking forward to using sign language in my day to day life.
  3. I'm looking for members who work in a school - I'm keen to speak to people who have worked in education and who have had to work with Deaf/deaf students. I began my second teaching assistant role in April, during lockdown, and am learning BSL online for a deaf student I have been paired with, to support her in her home learning. I feel I am picking up signs fairly fast, and I think this is down to the fact that I have a real interest in learning BSL as a skill, and have done for years, but was too afraid to take the plunge and dip my toes in to a course. Now that I have a reason to do it - I love learning BSL and find it such a fascinating language. I would love to talk to some teachers or teaching assistants about any experience they have had with deaf students before or currently ๐Ÿ™‚ please do get in touch! ๐Ÿ’–
  4. Hi there! My name is Paige, I am a nineteen year old student and I am currently learning BSL online during this corona virus lock down period. I would love to get the chance to practice and develop my skills alongside you through video calls where we can practice what we know and even discuss issues or new ways of learning BSL. I can be a little shy at first, so please excuse me if I am a little quiet. I am excited to begin this journey with you!
  5. Hi, I've joined some friends in a friendly meetup learning BSL. Is it possible to get some booklets. Thankyou
  6. Hiya! Complete newbie here; I've only been learning within the past week or so. Learning BSL has always been something I've wanted to do, but never made the time for๐Ÿ™„ I've been lucky enough have a friend who has been helping me via FaceTime, although our schedules never seem to match up very well. I've got a dictionary book on order via his recommendation, and watching youtube videos. I had a quick look on the calendar section and noticed that there are a few classes held in different locations... is anyone on this forum from Cambridgeshire area? Looking for someone who would be able to help me out in person with tutoring โ˜บ๏ธ E x

  8. Hi all im Lisa, I work for a care agency and support a variety of clients, recently we took on a package which are a married couple who are both mute/deaf, she has dementia as well and due to other issues is struggling with her mobility, im trying to learn different signs that help with her care routine, for example I would like to print off and laminate some cards with signs on such as stand, sit, move back etc. I'm hoping that if the sign is on the card along with the command then carers will begin to pick up bits of the signing which would be a great way of communicating with them. thanks for reading x
  9. Hi there! I'm an actress new to this site, and learning BSL. I would love to know the correct sentence structure for a line in a play. The sentence is... "Don't know where he's come from but he definitely seems to have something stuck up his..." I know the signs individually just not sure what order is correct to communicate them in, as I'm still very much learning the grammar, so would love some help! Many thanks
  10. Hi, I'm only learning and I want to check how accurate this is and would love any help/advice anyone could give me. I'm trying to work out the structure of BSL and I had this song in my head so I thought I'd give it a go. Also I was lazy and didn't get up the song so I'm afraid I'm also the singer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVzblDhXvqQ&feature=youtu.be Thank you.
