  1. You guys that do so amazingly at the fingerspelling challenge... I know I'm very new but I'm sure it slows me down how every time I type my answer it attached it at the end of the previous answer so I have to go back and erase and start over... Any tips?
  2. Hi I'm Wendy and I have only ever met one person from the Deaf community; it made me wish I knew how to communicate with him. I have always loved languages and would love to be fluent in BSL one day. It does feel strange and foreign though, like any new language does. I feel I need to build up a lot of courage before I post my little video of introducing myself in sign language!
  3. Hi all 👋 I've been umming and ahhing about throwing myself in and learning BSL, and I can now proudly say that I've not long started my journey! (very early days and currently only 2 weeks in!) As I'm so new to it all right now I'm not too sure whether having someone to practice with would be the best thing (I could probably only sign certain colours and numbers to you haha!), but I'd absolutely like to be able to practice with some of you when I can to help build and embed my knowledged as I would through my course. I work for a Bank and work from home due to Covid so I don't tend to see anybody to be able to practice, so I'm super excited that I've found this group and can get to know some of you 🙂 Speak to you soon, Anna x
  4. Hello!! My name is Steffani, I am 26 and in Lancashire. I've just started learning BSL and would love to try and get to know people with similar interests so we can be BSL friends I listen to K-pop, I am a veterinary nurse and a pet blood bank donor assistant (starting this weekend eeekk!!) Total nerd, love binge watching tv shows. I have a Dalmatian and a cat! Hopefully I will hear some people soon x
  5. Hi. I’m new at all this. I am currently learning BSL because I am profoundly hard of hearing and dependent on my hearing aid. Signing has always interested me but I have never had the courage to try and learn. Now my son is interested in learning too, I decided to give it a go. I work in a primary school as a HLTA teaching Art. I would love to see BSL become part of the curriculum the way french has.
  6. Hey I'm Sean, currently studying to be a therapist and work as a manager in food service and would love to make both aspects of my work my inclusive and hopefully meet some like-minded people!
  7. Hi All, My name is Izzy, I am a secondary science teacher who has a fair few pupils who use BSL. We have our support but I decided I wanted to do more, I wanted to communicate 1to1 with these pupils and find ways that I can describe the world of science to them as I am more then aware BSL is even harder when science is brought in to it. I have a lovely year 7 pupil who each Friday tests my understanding of key words in science into BSL and then if I can put them in a sentence and he teaches me those with the help of one of the schools signers and I teach him the science! I have also been working through the online course and loving it, but sometimes I wish I could practice a little bit more with people as practice makes perfect, right? Look forward to getting to know some of you! Izzy
  8. Hello! My name is Sarah, i am 20 years old and i have started studying British Sign Language. I have always been eager to learn BSL, but never had the option to at school. It has always annoyed me how i could learn French and never meet a French person in my whole life to use what i've learnt, but anyone i meet, already know, or love can be or become deaf at any moment. And the thought of not being able to communicate with them feels so rude and dehumanising. A big wake up call for me was when i was working as a Sales Assistant last year and two Deaf ladies came in and no one in the store could communicate with them, it was heartbreaking and i felt so rude. Since studying this course, i have been made aware of audist behaviours i have engaged with in the past, such as asking a Deaf person to write down what they want to say (when 1. that's not their preferred communication method, and 2. English isn't necessarily their 1st language) when it would be must easier and less stressful for them if they could communicate their preferred way (which is BSL). During the lockdown, i decided to study British Sign Language because i am currently out of work and have lots of time on my hands, and i figured i may as well learn something i've always wanted to do. I'm hoping i can use this in a future career for me as i want to work within a childcare or healthcare setting as my passion is to help others.
  9. Hi, I have decided to take up BSL as so many jobs keep coming up that I want and I have the other qualification just not the signing. So today I move forward, hoping to get my dream job at the end of this! At the moment I am a Pupil Support Assistant In a high school, I love it but I am overqualified and I'm getting frustrated, Ive always wanted to sign and I have the time to do it now.
  10. Hello there! I am new to learning BSL and I am really enjoying it. I have always been interested in learning and the opportunity came through my work. I am learning alongside a colleague/friend, which helps with practising.
  11. Hello all, My name is Maria and I have just started to learn BSL. I started learning when i was a teenager but had to stop due to other commitments but I always had the intention to come back to this. I would like to be able to make connections to other people who use BSL - I have a firm belief that in order to fully engage and a learn any language its important to have someone you can practice and learn with. Thank you for reading this and good luck to everyone who is just starting 🙂
  12. Hello, I am on my 3rd lesson of BSL and I'm really enjoying it. I've always wanted to learn sign language, and being on lockdown has made me have the time to start this course.
  13. Hey, my name is Niamh and I've been trying to learn BSL for a few years now. I really need help with expanding my vocabulary, recognising sign and using the correct sentence structure. I hope I can find help on this website!
  14. Good afternoon, my name is Tori and i am training to be an Operating Department Practitioner, currently in my second year. With the current pandemic, despite working within the hospitals, i found myself with much more free time and I would like to be able to be a British Sign Language interpreter within theatres once i qualify. Although anyone is welcome to bring their interpreters to theatre, they often dont and rely solely on lip reading and theatre is daunting enough for people without the added difficulty of trying to read 5 pairs of lips at once. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance
  15. Hey Folx! My name's Blake, He/Him, and I've just started properly learning BSL. I've known odd bits and pieces for a long time like finger spelling, basic introductions and random words since I'm an early years educator and have picked up pieces from children and parents. I've been looking for a local course to participate with for a while, but I have anxiety and a limited budget, so i'm now learning online and it seems to be going really well so far. I'm currently a Primary Teaching student; i'm hoping to learn in order to help the children/parents/carers I interact with as well as the D/deaf community (and myself whenever that anxiety hits).
  16. Hello! My name is Amy and I live in the North West. I have always wanted to learn sign language (sounds so cliché, but true) from a young age. I actually learnt how to fingerspell the alphabet in primary school and I have never forgotten it. I've said to myself for ages that I must try and find a course and also enquired in work (I'm a receptionist in a GP Surgery) but unfortunately due to lockdown that has all been put on hold. So I thought I would try and find a course in the meantime that I could do that would give me a good head start and foundation if work do find me a course to go on too. I've just completed the third assessment and I am loving it! It's everything I wanted it to be! I'm looking forward to completing the course and starting to put it into practice, it's also going to be an amazing tool to help at work too! It would be great to meet some more of you lovely people who are at the beginning of your journey and chat, maybe even make some friends and practice BSL! Hope to hear back from at least someone! 😂 Stay safe ✌️ Amy
  17. i work in a Primary school and have always know a few basic makaton signs but i wanted to learn sign language. It's something i've always wanted to learn but never seemed to have the time
  18. Hi everyone , My Names Vinnie 34 male from Dublin Ireland but living and working in the Uk for over 11 Years now. I'm learning BSL during lock down as I've loads of time to spare and i cant get enough of it. I already speak French and I was looking to add another language to my pile. I chose BSL for a number of reasons, I did know a bit of ISL (Irish sign language) but had no needs for it being in the UK, as I now class the UK as my home so it's BSL time. I work in Airline industry and I've had a number of encounters with deaf people which kinda embarrassed me for not knowing how to at least communicate in the most basic of manners. This is my main reason for wanting to learn it. I'm so open to meeting people from all walks of life and i would hate to miss out on meeting anyone just because i didn't speak their language. I personally think Sign Language should be something we all learn in school, even if its just the basics. I'm getting stuck in and learning as much as i can, online course. researching, trying to help my learning with sign-along songs etc some can be found on my tiktok @crackedupcrew. This really helped me with my muscle memory with signing. I'm still learning so there are mistakes. I would love to meet other people who are learning, or Deaf people who want to communicate with the hearing community. My goal is to be able to communicate with any deaf person and to learn about the deaf culture. Vinnie 👋
  19. Hi, my name is Jemma and I have always wanted to learn how to sign properly. I have picked up a few bits and bobs over the years but never done it all properly! Now was the perfect time to boost my knowledge and learn this very useful language since I have a bit more time on my hands. I currently work as a pupil support assistant and am looking to eventually become a teacher. I enjoy working with children with additional support needs and use basic makaton to communicate with them at the moment...Another language I would love to learn properly!
  20. Hi all, My name is Angel and I am here to learn a new language and add to my skills. I am proficient in a few languages already, and BSL was one that I really wanted to learn as well. As wth all new languages, I find it so intersting as it comes with so many interesting facts. I am excited to continue on this wonderful journey. I am currently working at a privae medical practice in London's medical hub in Harley Street, and hopefully this new language will be useful for me in the future (and I am sure it will be). Anyway, I don't want to ramble on. x
  21. Hello my name is Mingma. I have started learning sign language to be able to better communicate with my deaf friends
  22. Hi there! My name is Paige, I am a nineteen year old student and I am currently learning BSL online during this corona virus lock down period. I would love to get the chance to practice and develop my skills alongside you through video calls where we can practice what we know and even discuss issues or new ways of learning BSL. I can be a little shy at first, so please excuse me if I am a little quiet. I am excited to begin this journey with you!
  23. Hi guys I briefly began to learn BSL when I was about 12 or 13 and I have always been fascinated to learn more. 10 years later and I am learning BSL as a full-time hobby and, hopefully, I can find something (i.e. a career or voluntary work) where I can begin to use it in day-to-day life. I am really enjoying the course so far and look forward to completing my Level 1 this year.
