I'm looking for members who work in a school - I'm keen to speak to people who have worked in education and who have had to work with Deaf/deaf students. I began my second teaching assistant role in April, during lockdown, and am learning BSL online for a deaf student I have been paired with, to support her in her home learning. I feel I am picking up signs fairly fast, and I think this is down to the fact that I have a real interest in learning BSL as a skill, and have done for years, but was too afraid to take the plunge and dip my toes in to a course. Now that I have a reason to do it - I love learning BSL and find it such a fascinating language. I would love to talk to some teachers or teaching assistants about any experience they have had with deaf students before or currently 🙂 please do get in touch! 💖

Want to improve your communication with deaf people? Join our evening course! In collaboration with Sign for All, The Film Bunch are offering an Introduction to British Sign Language course, which is suitable for complete beginners who have a general interest in BSL and want to improve their communication skills with deaf people. No prior knowledge of BSL is needed. This is a non-accredited course where you will learn basic BSL including fingerspelling alphabet, numbers, grammar, everyday vocabulary and conversation such as greetings, asking for directions, emotions, family and more. The course will run for 8 weeks in Bethnal Green. Each lesson will last for 2 hours with a short break. Students will participate in group work and activities, meet deaf guest speakers and be given optional homework tasks. Students will get free tickets to our film screening in November and Christmas party in December. By the end of the course, you will have an understanding of BSL and deaf culture and be able to interact in basic conversation with deaf people. The course is also an ideal introduction to the language for those who may be thinking about studying for a Level 1 qualification in BSL. Hi all, I'm doing level 1 now, started January 2018 and about to do 102. I'm deaf (profound now) and teaching hubby after class each week and it's helped a lot already when I'm not wearing my hearing aids. I'm around during the day and as hubby works shifts lots of evenings and would be happy to video practice, Skype?

Hello, My name is Amelia and I am a research assistant with the Child Orientated Mental Health Intervention Centre looking at diagnosing Autism in deaf children. To give you a little background about our study, we are recruiting families with children aged 2-18 who are either deaf, deaf with a diagnosis of ASD or hearing with a diagnosis of ASD. We have worked with international experts to adapt three autism assessment tools to make them more accessible for deaf children and young people. Surprisingly, current assessment tools have not been designed with deaf children in mind and many are often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all! We hope that this research will help us to develop better assessment tools, understand more about how autism presents in deaf and hearing children and support families in receiving the right support Autism regularly goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed in deaf children because inappropriate assessments are being used.
