Just saying hello

Hello everyone. My name is Annie, I’m 39 and I’m new to BSL.

I’ve been a Dental Nurse for the last 22yrs and last year I decided whilst off on maternity leave with my youngest son that I was going to do something I’ve always wanted to do. My journey with BSL started many years ago when one of my school friends taught me the basics hello and finger spelling my name and the alphabet. He younger brother was born Deaf. I lost touch with my friend due to my career and life choices going in a different direction. In my job I’ve met many a patient I couldn’t communicate with but really wanted to. A couple of years ago a 15yrs girl walked into our surgery, she had just lost her mum and she was the only person in her life that could understand and communicate with her. My heart broke right there and then which reignited my want to learn. Now I’m in a position where I can spend time doing the course and learning without pressure from work commitments.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. 🙂
