Introduction - Hello

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Sallyann Blakemore and I have been doing the online BSL course during lock down. I have always wanted to learn sign language but just never managed to get round to doing it. I am shielding as I am a high risk case having had breast cancer last year and only finished my treatment just before Christmas. Therefore I have been advised by the government not to go out at all, at least until the end of June. So I found I had lots of time on my hands so finally decided to sign up and learn sign language. I am married and live with my husband. I have one son who is 26 and left home a long time ago. I am loving this course and hope once life gets back to normal to try and do some volunteer work at the local deaf school....but watch this space. I am struggling with remembering all the signs but really enjoying it. Be nice to hear from others doing this course. Good luck everyone.

Hi Sallyann!

I just came across your message. I hope you're well and great that you've been using your time to learn BSL. Me too! I've just finished the course but struggling to know how not to forget it all! Let me know if you're up for someone to practice with as I'd love to be using what I've learnt. I work in theatre so I'm without work but always watnted to learn BSL and have really enjoyed it!

Best,

Jesse

Hi Jesse

Lovely to hear from you and thank you for replying....sorry for the delay - I have been enjoying the sunshine......yes I would love to practice with you, though I am very slow at the moment....do you have access to zoom or whatsapp? for zoom I would need an email address from you or whatsapp your phone number.....are any of these any good for you, or if you are on facebook you can find me as Sallyann Blakemore, and private message me, which may be better, but any of the options are fine for me.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sallyann

If anyone is not a complete beginner and would like to practice that would be great! Australia is approx 9 hours ahead of London time...so hopefully we can find a suitable time:)
    • Hi, I am new to this forum. I am currently doing an online on-demand course along with a friend. I studied modern languages many years ago and am really interested to learn BSL - it is such an interesting and expressive language. I am also deaf in one ear (since early childhood) so am conscious that my hearing could worsen at some point.

    • I have always been really passionate about languages, and a few years ago I came across Christine Sun Kim Ted "The enchanting music of sign language" and it sparked my curiosity about SL. At that moment I knew nothing about it, I genuinely felt so surprised "how can it be that such a fascinating form of communication is so forgotten by the hearing folks???" A few years later after that (I had been working in improving and mastering my English), and especially since I am moving to Scotland i
