My name is Kaz Davies. I co-own and run a recording studio in Bristol, where I live. I have 3 children (eldest has moved out), a cat and a dog.

I am also a volunteer at The Hive in Bristol. I am bilingual and I have always found languages very interesting.

I started teaching myself BSL with videos online around April 2020. Though I have picked up bits of ASL & BSL when I was younger from friends, film and tv.

I finally registered for a BSL course this month and I am enjoying it very much!

I have already tried some with my sister-in-law who has learning difficulties and she and her carer were very encouraging!

My husband also has otosclerosis in his family. He has the early signs and I believe that it is the right time to begin learning BSL for all of us in the family. Especially as I am also quite a slow learner but so far, so good!

I wish all the other newbies good luck with their course and assessments!

Hello. My name is Wiktoria, I come from Poland. Polish my native language. I currently go to university and study Sport and Exercise Science.

I always wanted to learn sign but didn’t know where to start. I have been learning for about 3 weeks now, and I am really enjoying it 😁 I actually found out about online British sign language courses through a girl (I cannot remember her name) on TikTok mentioning them.

I have found that I am struggling signing without saying the words out loud. Does anyone else have this? Will this go away with more practice?

Kind regards to everyday

    • I have had a problem with Part Three on the online course, and it prevented me from moving on to the next stage.  I wanted to clear each level sequentially. I became discouraged about having to learn a whole range of occupations and locations, and was disappointed that "retired" was not included among them.  By now I think it would be WORK+ME+NO or something like that.  Also, no offense, but I'm not likely to have to use Carlisle or Teaching Assistant very often - and my home city (Belfast) isn'
    • That's always a challenge Claudette.  I'm lucky I have m y daighter who is also learning BSL, but it can be a slow process.  Good luck.
    • It is fantastic, I try to revise what I have learnt, after work. I am trying not to rush the course, but have noone to practice with.
    • Our next British Sign Language Level 3 course is starting on Monday 7th February! This course runs every Monday from 6pm - 9pm for 48 weeks and takes place at our London Training Centre.   This course will enable you to communicate in British Sign Language at Level 3 of the National Occupational Standards for Languages.   Our BSL Teachers will take your signing skills to the next level and have you communicating with more confidence and fluidity.
    • I have always had an interest in BSL since a young age even when I didn’t need hearing aids and I agree there should be the opportunity for pupils to learn BSL in school.
    • Hello Neil - same here! I have hearing aids (which changed my life) but I know it's only going to get more difficult to hear as time moves on. It's fabulous that you are teaching your children too - I honestly wish BSL was mandatory at schools! Good luck with your studies!
    • Hi Claudette - I am also learning online. Just started last week - it is a great way of learning I have found
    • Hi everyone My name is Chris and I am 49. I wear two hearing aids but it is likely I'll grow deafer over the years.  My wife is a nurse who has a Deaf student at the moment. His interpreter recommended I start learning BSL sooner rather than later just in case. It is something I have always danced around and had an interest in. The recommendation coupled with the young lady on Strictly (big fans in our house!) made me sign up to the fab course. I've done lessons one and two and passed both.
