Would anyone talk to me for an article I'm writing about learning BSL?

Recommended Posts

I'm writing an article for my journalism degree - it won't be published or made public. If you're learning, it'd be great to hear from you about how that's going. If you're Deaf & would be willing to share any thoughts with me, for example about how signing impacts the way you view the world, how it's impacted your pandemic experience, whether you think autocaptions are going to impact signing going forward, what needs changing in society regarding signing, I'd love to hear from you.

message me here, or by email [email protected]

I'd love to hear your insight & reflections!

Hi, your article sounds interesting.

I am trying to learn BSL again after learning some over 30 years ago, but sadly not used regularly since. I'm not deaf but work as a dental nurse,  we have a new deaf patient and I wanted them to feel relaxed and safe, so used the very little signs I remembered.  Covid made it much harder due to face covering.  But they thanked me for trying.  That inspired me to try and relearn.

Hi Bertie,

I am trying to learn BSL for a few reasons. Partly because I want to learn new skills but this was also influenced by the pandemic and I read some interesting pieces on how much of an issue face coverings are for the deaf community to communicate.

I used to be a Journalism student a few years back and graduated in 2015 and so I am more than happy to talk to you about it. Let me know if you would like to send over some questions for me to answer

thanks!

    • Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have written a play, a solo show, and there are a couple of sections in which I will be signing BSL. I completed a certifying basic BSL course, so I can sign, but these concepts are quite subtle and tricky (mainly about spirituality and religion, or certain specific actions such as 'stumbling'). I know some of them, found others online, but I still don't have all of them so I'm wondering whether anyone can send me in the right directi
    • Hi All, so I’ve had my hearing aid for approx. 1 year, started learning sign language a couple of weeks ago and seem to be getting on ok with the basics, I’m a gymnastics coach, personal trainer, I have a day job and I’m adult inclusive ice skater and I have two children who are also learning sign language with me so we can communicate if my hearing completely goes.
    • Hi all, I thought I would answer the 'why?' question which I thought would be easier than it is! It made me think for sure! Learning BSL has for a long time been something I wanted to do and should have done a long time ago. As a youngster I spent time abroad and the friends I made at school didn't speak English and due to us being kids we just worked round it and communicated in our own version of gestures/signs. Over the months (I was the only English speaking kid there) we developed a pr
