New to BSL - is Makaton easily understood by people who sign BSL?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I started an introductory course to BSL a couple of months ago with the aim of becoming full qualified eventually.

One of the ways I have been learning BSL is by learning signed songs from YouTube.

I have noticed some YT videos are labelled as 'BSL/Makaton'.

I understand what Makaton is and it's differences from BSL and what it is used for, however I was wondering if members of the Deaf/deaf community or/and people who use BSL also understand Makaton without having to learn it, as such? I hope that makes sense! I'm just curious and would be interested to know if BSL/SSE and Makaton are all condsidered to be fairly similar or whether it is in fact, the opposite.

Thanks in advance!

@Lola2020 Makaton is a sign language generally used with young children or those with difficulties in learning or communication. It uses a mixture of speech, signs and symbols. @DJohnson I think most of the signs are the same but the grammar isn't the same as BSL, it follows English structure.
