Learning BSL with my Mum

Hi all, my Mum and I are learning BSL together and using this course.

My younger brother had delayed speech when he was really young and Makaton was amazing for communication.

It's always been something we wanted to learn but we've now committed.

Every week we aim to video call each other and learn together giving ourselves homework and challenges, it's great and we're already starting to recognise some signs in other conversations. We've just finished learning the signs for different animals on the course.

I'm looking forward to finishing the course and moving on to more complicated sentence structures because currently, I do't know how to structure sentences correctly.

I'm hoping to use this form as a means of further explanation and finding new signs because sometimes I think Google can be a bit scarce.

Good luck to everyone else on the course and who's on their journey of learning BSL.

    • Hi all, I am Police Community Support Officer and hope to develop sign language to allow me to communicate with others who rely on the skills of BSL.
    • Hi everyone. Name me what, Jeff. I've been basic signing for about 10 years now after getting a basic lesson from the company that I used to work for. My aim now, is to become fully competent within BSL and gain a qualification, and then look for any kind of employment that relates to BSL.

    • Hello everyone. I am incredibly new to BSL (I've had one class at introductory level so far but I intend to pursue). I am 48 and I am experiencing some hearing loss but really I want to learn to sign to give myself more communication options and to be able to communicate with as many people as I can.
    • Hello everyone, For my introduction to British Sign Language training, I am to post here my reasons to why I am dedicated to learn BSL. My previous role was a teaching and learning assistant at a secondary school and my current role is an art instructor in a day service for adults with learning difficulties. I also volunteer with the NHS doing art sessions with long term patients. After my BA Fine Art course at the Open University, I wish to apply for a masters MSc in Art Therapy. I fe
    • Hello! I am very new here and I would like recommendations of online BSL courses where I can learn online in the evening. Cost isn’t an issue but it needs to be money well spent.  For context, am a lifelong hearing aid wearer with no BSL knowledge apart from finger spelling the alphabet… slowly.    Thanks in advance.
    • Hi there  Name we what - Michelle...I have a hearing loss and wear cross aids. Hearing is tricky in many situations such as shops, restaurants and busy places. I am learning BSL with my adult daughter, so that we can sign together when hearing is tough. It will definitely help in fitness classes where, with the air conditioning and music I can barely hear instructions.  We are looking to connect with others to help me learn and embed signs. Please do connect with us.  Mrs Mi :)
