I’ve been learning BSL informally for two years as part of my job as a support worker. Was about to begin formal training just before the lockdown happened so not sure if/when it will be now. My workplace only fund level one as the people we support have very basic communication. I plan to go all the way though with the aim of becoming an interpreter in the future.

So, in the meantime I am trying to get whatever experience I can. Particularly keen on developing my receptive language skills right now. The people I support have some very tricky to decipher signing because of their mental and physical disabilities but it’s like when only you can understand your own child speaking. I’m getting better all the time

  I definitely think that schools should teach non-verbal communication to all students to some extent, for inclusivity of people like your son avsamp and because any level of any language is a great skill! I've been teaching lots of my friends the BSL finger alphabet

  I am doing my Duke of Edinburgh certification at the moment and need to learn a new skill for it. I chose to learn sign language because it's something I've never learnt before and I love languages, I think any language is an amazing skill to have.
