Hi everyone, I hope you're all well.

My name is Amy and I started learning BSL Level 1 a few weeks ago. I just passed the Module 5 assignment this morning (yay me). I'm trying to do a little bit everyday, even if it's just going over signs. I'm learning BSL because I became hard of hearing about two years ago (in my early 20's) and my hearing has recently deteriorated to the point that understanding verbal communication is extremely difficult for me. I'm a double hearing aid user. It's taken me awhile but I've finally got around to learning, and I'm having a great time with it. I feel so accomplished when I understand something or am able to learn new signs - it's fab as these last few years have not been good for me mentally or physically. I've had severe social anxiety my whole life, which naturally got worse through the pandemic and lockdowns - I've been working to overcome this but it's been difficult with the hearing loss as well. I'd enjoy making some signing friends!

Best of luck to everyone learning!

    • Hi, I am Lyn. I am learning BSL as I had a head injury a few years ago. I lost most of my hearing and my speech was impaired for a while. It was quite frightening as I couldn't really communicate with people although I could understand. I found people made assumptions about what was going on particularly Doctors and medical staff. I don't ever want to be made to feel like that again. Or, indeed , be treated like that again. I am now at a time in my life where I have a bit more time to learn so h
