Beginner advice please

Hi I have just started the beginners course after being interested in sign language for a long long time.  I even went to college 25 years ago and did a beginners course however my life took a different path and I did not continue.  I have now come back to it and I would love to become an interpreter or be involved somehow working with the deaf community. I think sign language should be taught in schools as part of the curriculum, no one should be or feel left out of a conversation.  Anyway has anyone started learning this later in life? I'm 46 now and I am remembering most of it however having a full on conversation with someone and understanding is a whole different ball game!
