Hard of Hearing BSL novice looking for Manchester buddies to practice with

Hi all,

I was born hard of hearing and I got my cochlear implant when I was 19 (I'm now 31). I'm hoping to find someone or even an existing local group I can practice BSL with. Feel free to drop me a message if this is of interest to you!

Manchester has a deaf centre and a deaf social club you can get involved in. You can watch BSL zone esp, the factual box sets for practice and keep a look out for BSL theatre and the BDA events. Last year was quite good as it was in Manchester and they had a BSL fest which was a week of events including poetry and film. It's harder and harder to find native speakers to practice with and unless you have an active deaf club its hard. All the best.

It's great that you're looking to practice BSL with others! To find BSL buddies in Manchester, you could try joining local BSL groups or meetups, such as those on Facebook, Meetup.com, or BSL communities in your area. You can also check out local deaf clubs or sign language cafes, which are often informal spaces for people to practice BSL together. Additionally, BSL-focused events or workshops in Manchester could be a great way to connect with others who are at a similar skill level.

      Hiya guys! My name is Alex and I’m 22 years old. I am not part of the Deaf community, however I work in a charity shop where we sometimes get customers who use sign to communicate. I love having a chat with everyone who comes through the door, and I don’t want anybody to feel left out of that, so I’ve just started an online BSL course so I can connect with my community more. I’m super excited to learn more!

      Hi I’m Shelly.i have always been fascinated by BSL and always wanted to learn. I am frontline with the ambulance service and having come across people iof the Deaf community I have now vowed to learn it.

      Hello, Martin! I am currently taking up a course which I paid for 3£, it's in british-sign co uk. It's a nice course. It is great for goal-oriented type of learners. You get 2 years of access and a certificate. You can do assessments there. Goodluck on your journey! And it's nice to know that stories like this exist, makes me wanna tear up. 😁

I think learning new things is very important and how very thoughtful of you to think about BSL, there is an online course, if you click "BSL online course" at the top of the page it takes you straight to it, you don't have to make a monthly donation just a one time donation of however much you can afford minimum 3EUR.  I hope you continue this journey

      I am 63 and have health issues but I still want to be of use.  I have thought for a long time about learning sign language, but never ĥad the confidence to follow it through. I am now unemployed, with 4 years left to official retirement. I met a rep for the deaf on the way to the bus home today from the job centre. Even though I could'nt afford to to donate monthly the young lady thanked me for stopping and showed me 3 simple sighed words, which I will ror some reason always remember.  When I got home and sat watching TV there was a antiques program on where both people where deaf. This just confirmed the fact that I would love to help, there is so much scope to help the deaf comunity, auctions, schools plus so much more. How can I learn and get involved? Martin

As a future early childhood educator, I want to be able to support every child in my classroom, including those who are Deaf or hard of hearing, or who might simply benefit from visual communication.
