My name is Michael. I am 63 and have been to too many concerts! Result... profoundly deaf in left ear and hard of hearing in right ear. I don't know anyone who signs but given that my hearing is gradually deteriorated it's only time b4 I lose it I think. I'm encountering the usual feelings of isolation and exclusion so that I'd learn sign language to prepare myself. Practice makes perfect I hope.

Welcome to the forum, Michael! It's great that you've decided to learn BSL, and you'll find many people on here who can help. How long have you been learning for up until now?

I've just completed the third module. Work priorities are getting in the way and because I don't live in a deaf community I find I'm going back frequently to relearn because I forget! There's a lot of signs to think about and remember. Bite size chunks works best for me. 

 

But really enjoying it. 😊

Hi, Michael. A good thing about the course is that it can be accessed in your free time at times that suit you, and you can always re-cap on some of the modules ready for the final assessment. Do you have any local Deaf clubs that you could visit near to you? If you would like a practise buddy, I'd be more than happy to help. :)

      Hi there! I'm Laila and I've just started a beginners course in BSL. I work in a nursery as a senco and one to one currently but hoping to move on to a different job role in a special school or a school setting. I've been fascinated by BSL for years now and I've finally decided to take the leap and start a course so here we are! I am already level 1, 2, 3 and soon to be level 4 trained in makaton in the new year but ive always loved watching people use BSL and even though I'm not deaf i still plan on signing as i speak to myself to ensure i dont forget any of it and i just find it fun to do anyway! I am a little suspicious of my hearing anyway as it isnt the best and i do have moments where i lose hearing in one of my ears for a few minutes at a time the longest being an hour and sometimes in both ears together so I'm looking into that but im so excited to finally be a BSL user and join this community
