Hi, my name is Jenna. I've just found out my daughter is Deaf. Both my husband and I are hearing, and we have no Deaf relatives. She is only 6 weeks old, so I'm trying to be proactive and learn as much as I can so she has the option of Signing. I'm a primary school teacher, so I have some signalong/makaton but I'm hoping to be more proficient. I'm also hoping I'll be able to learn more about the Deaf community for my daughter as she grows up. 😊

Hi Jenna,

I thought I would post here as I spotted your post whilst I was doing some online research about bsl and found it a bit surreal as your message had a lot of parallels to our situation. I am in Scotland with a 7 week old who has been diagnosed as deaf last week. Just felt I should say hi. Happy to have a chat if your in the frame of mind to do so.

Thanks,

Karrie

Between the Deaf and the Hearing, BSL serves as a bridge. If they are unable to spontaneously communicate, people with hearing loss may feel alone. As a society, it is our duty to solve this problem and promote the widespread use of any useful communication tools that may be available.

    • Hi I'm Polly,  I learned very basic BSL when I was a childminder, and really enjoyed it. I currently work with the police and I am looking for a career change. The idea of becoming a BSL interpreter really appeals to me , but I am struggling to find the information I need. I understand the route to becoming an interpreter is long and costly and the accessibility for me in Lincolnshire is very limited. But any help anyone can give into how I can start my journey would be hugely appreciated.  Xx
    • Hi, I'm Effie. I'm autistic. Sometimes, when I get particularly dysregulated, I find speech difficult. I'm also highly sensitive to noise and love the idea of being able to communicate silently. I've always been interested in signing, and finally decided to have a go at learning.
    • This is a valid topic, I too am left handed and can't get above 21 on the speed test as those hands are not as I see my own hands!
    • Hello! How did your first exam go?  I wasn't a member on here when you posted, but in Level 1 your exams aren't expected to be in sign order, my tutor didn't teach sign order until Level 2. I'm currently doing Level 2 and must sign in the correct bsl structure in my exams. Drift
    • Hello, my name is Drift. I started to learn BSL as a hobby, resulting in falling in love with this beautiful language and progressing to level 2. Would love to practice signing more often.
    • Learning BSL has been something I had been interested in for some time, but like most ideas I didn't actually do anything to actually make this happen, until one day at work..... I work for the ambulance service, responding to those emergency 999 calls. Now this particular day was a dark early start and our first job or the day was a welfare check for a patient that wasn't responding to their lifeline call. The job came through stating that the patient was deaf, was give the keys safe details so we could gain entry to the property. The patient was alright, but they were only aware of our presence when we turned on his bedroom light. In al honesty I felt ashamed and disappointed with myself that the only way we could communicate was through typing messages on a mobile phone.   That is why I am learning BSL. I'm still very early on in my BSL journey but it has already come in useful.
    • Hi, I work in theatre. Several shows are signed for the patrons. I thought it would be very useful to have the ability to be able to sign to make their experience in coming to the theatre more enjoyable.
    • Hello, my name is Beth. I'm learning BSL as part of my DofE course. I also think it's a really important skill to have, and a very very important language
