Raevyn Posted December 17, 2021 Report Posted December 17, 2021 Hi all! So I am starting to look at learning ASL deeply and a question I have been wondering is if it is a language that crosses borders well? Like if I was to visit other countries I get it may not be the same sign language they use but it would be close enough to be able to communicate well? My research so far seems to go back and forth on this.
EmilyC Posted December 30, 2021 Report Posted December 30, 2021 Hi Raevyn! In my experience, if you're travelling to a country which does not use ASL, you will not likely have much success in communicating effectively. Sign languages have just as much complexities in grammar, syntax, and regional nuance as spoke languages. More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language Hope this helps!
