I'm here because it is long overdue and I'm a dinosaur who wants to do something good. My daughter who is now 22 started to lose her hearing when she was 8. We have been on a very long journey with her as she has found herself and developed into the extraordinary young woman she is. She has chosen to make accessibility her lifelong goal and profession. How good is she? Two days before she handed in her final dissertation she was employed by Glastonbury as a consultant for accessibility. This week she graduated from Uni and on a dinner the night before she graduated, I noticed that due to the level of noise in the restaurant one of her friends who had joined us was signing to assist her. I couldn't do that and it struck a very big chord with me. Her friend has no issue with hearing whatsoever, just had learned to assist his friend. Something her father had never done. So here I am, signed up to BSL to get a level one qual. She doesn't know. I intend to surprise her at some point. It has been long overdue. Looking forward to engaging with people as I learn this marvelous language.
