I've always wanted to learn BSL and even got the course as a Christmas present one year but I'm not great at sticking to things and life got in the way. However, a month or two ago my husband lost his hearing overnight and we suddenly found ourselves in a position where we could only communicate by writing everything down. Without technology and voice recognition apps I would have writer's cramp constantly. He is getting better at lip reading but as I have lost a few front teeth so he struggles to lip read a lot of the things I say and our eldest has a speech impediment which makes things harder. So we're all, as a family, trying to learn enough sign language to return life to as close to our normal as possible.
