Hi, I've just enrolled on a BSL course. I have been wanting to learn BSL for years, ever since volunteering with deaf children in the RDA group at my local riding stables but have never found the time to get past more than a few basic phrases learnt from a YouTube video. With a national lockdown in place and everywhere closed, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to work towards my goal of being able to learn and use BSL!
New to BSL - is Makaton easily understood by people who sign BSL?

Hi all,
I started an introductory course to BSL a couple of months ago with the aim of becoming full qualified eventually.
One of the ways I have been learning BSL is by learning signed songs from YouTube.
I have noticed some YT videos are labelled as 'BSL/Makaton'.
I understand what Makaton is and it's differences from BSL and what it is used for, however I was wondering if members of the Deaf/deaf community or/and people who use BSL also understand Makaton without having to learn it, as such? I hope that makes sense! I'm just curious and would be interested to know if BSL/SSE and Makaton are all condsidered to be fairly similar or whether it is in fact, the opposite.
Thanks in advance!
