Hi, I'm a musician and artist and learning BSL to improve my communication skills and start the process of developing performances/artwork/events that are suitable and interesting for both D/deaf and hearing audiences/artists. Learning BSL online seemed like a good place to start and a way to connect with people. I co-direct an experimental sound festival based in the Midlands and we would like to develop some new work with D/deaf and hearing artists to make multi-media performances/artworks.  If you're a sonic/visual artist, or know anyone who is, I'd love to hear from you and know what you do!

Hi, I'm a musician (singer, pianist, choir director, composer/arranger) and also based in the Midlands. I know a little sign language through friends and joined the forum to learn more. I'd be interested in chatting about this 🙂

      Why I'm Learning BSL

      I'm learning BSL so I can communicate with my friend and others. It's outrageous that we were never taught this at school so that we can communicate with D/deaf people. I hope to surprise my friend next time I see them. I'm a little worried that I don't pick things up fairly quickly but hopefully I can start to have a conversation with them when I next see them.

      Hi I'm Ellie, I've just started learning sign language so I can communicate with a friend. I'm quite nervous that it will take me a while to pick things up but I'm ashamed we never learnt BSL in school and that I couldn't just communicate with my friend naturally.

      I'm learning BSL because I have hearing loss and tinnitus due to meneieres disease and my hearing getting worse.  I originally took a level 1 course 25+ years ago as I had a friend who was profoundly deaf and a BSL teacher. Unfortunately we lost touch, but now I'm learning again

      I'm autistic and, though I generally have little issue using spoken languages, I find myself looking for an alternative that might feel more comfortable and be more accessible to me during verbal shutdowns. Furthermore, BSL will allow me to connect with more people in the disabled community and other communities I am a part of, which I really value.
