I've been wanting to learn BSL for so long and have just never motivated myself to actually do it. I've been able to fingerspell since I was in school, and ask very very basic questions, but that's as far as I ever got. When I used to work in hospitals more often (I'm a diagnostic radiographer), I always felt bad that I could communicate in other foreign languages, but not with patients who used BSL, and would either have to write down or use interpreters for them (which was worse during COVID lockdowns with masks). Now I can at least have a basic conversation with them and others in the deaf community without having to rely as heavily on interpreters, which makes me feel like I'm actually connecting with them more. I have a lot to learn, but I'm very willing!
