Hi there, I've been learning BSL for about two years now and I'm currently half way through my level two course. I am studying occupational therapy at university and I was wondering if anyone on here has experience with occupational therapy as a Deaf service user or know of anyone who has used BSL as a method of communication while using occupational therapy?

Hi Katie

i used to be a Children’s OT assistant and we came across both deaf children and also deaf parents so it was helpful to know at least some finger spelling to communicate with them. I now work as a children’s physio assistant and again work with deaf children and parents so I would say it might depend on the demographic you work with but also always something useful to have if you work in health and therapies services 🙂

Not sure if a reply almost a year later is much use but if you're interested, @hannahtheOT on Twitter is a hearing occupational therapist who works in a Deaf mental health ward!

    • Hi  everyone, this is my first post on the forum.  I work as part of the Front of House Team in a theatre and I am interested in learning some sign language to be able to communicate more easily with the many members of the deaf community who come to the theatre. So far I am doing ok in the comfort of my own home but under pressure I get flustered.  Does anyone else find the same problem? I think a lot is down to constant repetition and practice.
    • Hello everyone 🙂 I'm Layne. I am about to take my BSL202 and BSL203 at the start of next week 😬 I luckily passed BSL201 last week 😌 I am based in India so it is tricky to find people to practice with. If anyone is up super early in the UK and looking for someone to converse with I am 5.5 hours ahead so will be around! Thank you 🙏
