Hiya, my name's Ash and I've wanted to learn BSL for years now and after looking up random signs on the internet I thought doing a proper course sounded good so I started a beginners course. I am not deaf myself but I am also known for my questionable hearing as I sometimes find it tough to hear what others are saying, especially in a loud area, I also have a deaf grandmother but she does not sign. I've always enjoyed using non verbal forms of communication as sometimes I find it a bit tough to express myself verbally, being neurodivergent. I hope to be able to use this to practice with people and talk to people who also want to learn as there are no in person groups anywhere near me, living in a very rural part of Britain. Nice to meet you all :)

Hi Ash and Tom, nice to meet you! I am currently doing level 1 at uni. I am currently practising for my 101 conversational exam, having delayed it from the summer due to some health issues, and have done a little for 102. I am a bit rusty, but I would love to chat if it would be of use to you. It seems like the video forums aren't used all that much, we could Zoom if you'd like that.

      Hi everyone, I'm currently on level 2 BSL. I wanted to learn sign language to enable my writing workshops to be fully inclusive. I am struggling with structure and literally remembering everything while not getting enough practice. Hope to meet some nice people through this forum. I am in Liverpool.

      Why I’m learning BSL

      Hi all Ive wanted to learn sign language for many years. I have a cousin who signs and I loved watching her but same old … No time ! Anyway I’ve made time (even switched job to give me more control of what I want to do) so off to college I went and haven’t looked back.  I passed level 1 before Christmas and have started level 2. I am struggling a bit as I feel I need more contact with people who sign. I’ve joined a couple of groups 1 in Liverpool and one more local. Love it ! Anyway happy signing everyone ❤️

      Looking for BSL practice buddy

      Hi all, my name is Tayo and learn something new every month to keep me busy in a less rigid way than my usual STEM job and after doing a psychology course I’d like to learn BSL. I started a week ago but then I realised I’d need someone to practice onlinewith to accelerate my learning and maybe just allow me practice more as I’m doing this mainly because I want to be that person in the room able to mediate if there’s ever need for it and make sure people in the non hearing community feel included, as it’s not something taught in school(I believe it should be).

      Hello Drift. I think we have met in the NW Deaf Cafe’ ?    This , I founded two years ago and after an unsure beginning it has grown to such a wonderfully happy place to be. As well as monthly Deaf Cafe’ we have monthly Deaf Pub (!)  and weekly conversation table. We have people with all sorts of BSL skills and those just learning in the free beginner’s classes in our local library. I enjoy leading these very much. From a neighbouring  village a few people came to visit our Deaf Cafe’ last year and  are now setting up their own . This is wonderful for the area where we find many people with hearing impairments are isolated. As no- one in this village currently signs , I am introducing them to the BSL basics and their enthusiasm is so rewarding. Such a great thing for a village to decide to do.   I too have a problem practising conversation though ; I have so much still to learn ! I returned to BSL many years after my first venture in 1992 when I passed the exam, now known as Level 1.  Good luck with your Level2 .
