Hi there

Am new to BSL and new to this site. I attend beginner class at my local college but it's not accredited. I can fingerspell but really struggle to 'read' fingerspelling!  Am working my way through learning vocabulary but only seem to retain a very small amount. Any help on offer greatly appreciated.

Hello AnnieD, I find my self in a very similar situation with BSL. I have the alphabet more or less down and am trying to move on to greetings and family on the course I’m on but forget almost everything in real life encounters.

My availability is a bit chaotic but should always be free a few hours late/ early morning (24:00-03:00) and on my work days off throughout the day if people plan a time to practice. I am new to this style of learning and a little nervous in conversations but hope everything goes well. So if anyone would like to get in contact Of a similar level I’m glad to try work out a time if I’m able. I want to post my unit topics along with the period I’ll be revising the material over for anyone interested in practicing old signs or learning new ones.

good luck all

Hi! I'm in the same boat, very new to BSL and need some practice. I'm learning for work as we work with a lot of volunteers with different abilities and needs, and want to be able to include anybody who is hard of hearing or deaf. I'm doing an online course which covers the basics, as the Level 1 courses were too expensive for me at the moment. I can just about say "Hello, how are you?" and "my name is Francesca" but that's about it! Really enjoying learning BSL but know that I need to practice for anything else to stick in my brain!

    • Hi Chris . Very jealous that you are at Preston doing the degree . I so wanted to do this when I was younger. I hope you enjoy the course and succeed in pursuing a career in Deaf awareness and language.
    • I really hope that you will find the course useful.  It cannot be easy for you but communication is so important and I can truly appreciate why you want to do this i really hope that it helps you ..Good luck .
    • Hi my name is Trevlin I live in NorthWest England . I am deaf myself since age 3  from measles damage but have wanted to involve myself in deaf /Deaf culture and language for a long time. I  hoped in my younger years  to study a Uclan to do the deaf studies degree but that didn't happen. I am now studying level one sign language at college and love it but as I'm now in my 70th decade I may have left it to late .  I would love to know any other potential signers and see how people are going on .I'm enjoying this course as an add on to college in an attempt to keep the grey cells firing .
    • Hi everyone! A little about me is that I have a neurological condition, Hemiplegic Migraines, that can take away my ability to speak for days at a time and for the past few years I've struggled to communicate in any other possible way; text to speech apps (which is time comsuming),just accepting that I have to have someone guess what im trying to say, etc. So I decided to try learning BSL in the hope that I can at least communicate more directly. Hopefully it'll be more effective and efficient way of communicating during my HM attacks.
    • Hi,  I'm Neil from Kent. I am fully hearing. I am a complete beginner and trying to learn as had an interacting with a deaf person and realised how utterly ignorant i was! I then learnt a couple of signs to be able to say hello / good evening etc to be polite.... and guess it spiralled from there.
    • I initially started a Facilities Management BSc at the University of Lancashire, however after finding it wasn't for me, I decided to see what other degrees they had on offer. LUCKILY, I found BSL and Deaf studies! I am so happy to be learning BSL and about Deaf culture. It's hard! but worth it.. "I KNOW I PUT THIS ON THE WRONG THREAD!" AHHHHH Chris
