Hi there

Am new to BSL and new to this site. I attend beginner class at my local college but it's not accredited. I can fingerspell but really struggle to 'read' fingerspelling!  Am working my way through learning vocabulary but only seem to retain a very small amount. Any help on offer greatly appreciated.

Hello AnnieD, I find my self in a very similar situation with BSL. I have the alphabet more or less down and am trying to move on to greetings and family on the course I’m on but forget almost everything in real life encounters.

My availability is a bit chaotic but should always be free a few hours late/ early morning (24:00-03:00) and on my work days off throughout the day if people plan a time to practice. I am new to this style of learning and a little nervous in conversations but hope everything goes well. So if anyone would like to get in contact Of a similar level I’m glad to try work out a time if I’m able. I want to post my unit topics along with the period I’ll be revising the material over for anyone interested in practicing old signs or learning new ones.

good luck all

Hi! I'm in the same boat, very new to BSL and need some practice. I'm learning for work as we work with a lot of volunteers with different abilities and needs, and want to be able to include anybody who is hard of hearing or deaf. I'm doing an online course which covers the basics, as the Level 1 courses were too expensive for me at the moment. I can just about say "Hello, how are you?" and "my name is Francesca" but that's about it! Really enjoying learning BSL but know that I need to practice for anything else to stick in my brain!

    • Hi, I’m learning BSL because I’m hearing impaired and finding it harder and harder to hear speech. Hoping that one day I can talk with others in BSL.
    • Hello, I'm Denise. I am learning BSL because I work in a secondary school and think it would be beneficial for my role as a teaching assistant. :)

    • Hi there, I'm Charlie! 👋🙂 I'm from Scotland and am currently studying at university. I'm not Deaf or know anyone who is - however I chose to start learning BSL through british-sign.co.uk as I believe it's essential to know ... and what's the harm in making the world a little more accessible? I knew a small amount of Makaton when I was very little (although I understand it is not the same as BSL), but found it to be quite helpful growing up. I'm happy to be a part of  this community, and I hope to make friends along the way.
    • Hi Ash and Tom, nice to meet you! I am currently doing level 1 at uni. I am currently practising for my 101 conversational exam, having delayed it from the summer due to some health issues, and have done a little for 102. I am a bit rusty, but I would love to chat if it would be of use to you. It seems like the video forums aren't used all that much, we could Zoom if you'd like that.
    • my name is ethan, i am a disabled trans person and i wanted to learn BSL as a hearing person because, if the opportunity ever arises, i'd love to be able to communicate efficiently with Deaf people. i'd also really like to do my part in making the Deaf community feel more accepted, and seeing disabled people in media and irl makes me feel incredibly seen and less alone, so why not do my part to make that a reality for Deaf people?
    • Hey! 👋    so I’m going to re-start on Sunday, so I could do one evening next we’re off that suits you?    R x
