Welcome to the forum, Katherine! It's great that you've decided to learn BSL! How long have you been learning for up to now?
-
Hello! My name is Katherine, I am a British-Mexican linguist, and am beginning to work as a part-time primary school teaching assistant. I also do a bit of English/Spanish translating and interpreting on the side. Growing up with 2 languages and 2 cultures, moving back and forth between countries, resulted in certain language and speech difficulties, making sign languages very attractive to me personally. I started learning Mexican sign language years ago but never continued, and upon resettling back here I am finally committed to learn sign language, and find BSL fascinating. I look forward to communicate in BSL with other students as well as within the deaf community, whom I'm very curious to meet. Cheers!

Hi, I'm Jason and I'm a student at uni : I'm learning BSL so I can communicate with and understand the deaf community more! I'm hoping to get a really good knowledge of BSL while I'm here.

My interest came from BSL module in uni (student paramedic) and I wanted to build on my knowledge so that I would be able to communicate with patients in the future. I also love chatting to strangers and I want to be able to do that with people who sign to!!

I work in commercial aviation as Senior Cabin Crew. I wanted to learn Sign Language as we carry an increasing number of persons who identify as deaf, and I think it is an invaluable skill to have from a communication point of view. Although we have ASL and BSL capabilities via electronic QR codes on board, the ability to provide that personal and human interaction is equally important.

I work in research and want to learn BSL to enable more inclusivity within this field. I work with many different communities and find that the deaf community is too often overlooked. I want to address this and hopefully learn a lot myself and maybe gain some new friends.

Hello, I am a Clinical Research Practitioner. I recruit people to research studies mostly in hospitals but will be moving out into the wider community..

Hello. I am learning sign language for my DofE award and am currently enjoying it. I am keen to learn it and personally think I am learning it quite well. There is deaf community centre near me so after I have nailed BSL i intend on visiting and interpreting for my local park run as a volunteer

I am learning BSL because I want to feel more connected to the Deaf community. Even though I am deaf and use a cochlear implant, I grew up using spoken language, so I never fully learned sign language. Over time, I started to feel left out in Deaf spaces where people communicate through BSL. Learning BSL feels important to me not just for communication, but for belonging. I want to be able to express myself freely, understand others and be part of conversations without barriers. It is also important for my work, as I support people with different needs, and I want to provide more inclusive and accessible support in the future.

Hi everyone, My name is Devanshi and I’m currently living in Nottingham. I work as a support worker and I’m really passionate about inclusion and supporting people with different needs. I am deaf and use a cochlear implant. I was not born deaf, my speech developed as I was growing up, so I have mainly communicated using spoken language. However, over time I started to feel a bit excluded in Deaf spaces, as many people communicate through BSL and I wasn’t confident in it. That’s one of the main reasons I decided to start learning British Sign Language. I want to feel more connected to the Deaf community, communicate better and be part of conversations without feeling left out. I also hope it will help me support others better in my work and future career. I’m currently learning at a basic level, so I’m still very new — but I’m excited to learn and improve 😊 Looking forward to connecting with you all!

Hi everyone! My name is Hannah and i'm learning BSL to help with a job i've just started. I've always thought it was interesting to learn and would help others to feel more included, can't believe it isn't taught in school to be honest. Would love to make some new friends to learn BSL alongside and maybe give me some feedback! ☺️

Hi Ethan I'm thinking about creating a BSL learner group chat for level 1/beginners. Thinking maybe a whatsapp group where we communicate via muted video message (and text if needed). If this is something you'd be interested in email me [email protected]

Hi everyone, I'm currently on level 2 BSL. I wanted to learn sign language to enable my writing workshops to be fully inclusive. I am struggling with structure and literally remembering everything while not getting enough practice. Hope to meet some nice people through this forum. I am in Liverpool.
