I'm Canadian but have lived in Scotland for 11 years now.
I began the BSL course initially to assist me when providing First Aid cover at events to communicate with anyone who cannot communicate verbally (whether through hearing impairement or non-verbal conditions) but after beginning the course found out I am also losing my hearing. It is hereditary and I've lost 1/4 hearing on one side and 30% on the other....so was fitted with hearing aids. It will degenerate further, it is just a wait and see situation as to how quick that happens. I lost an additional 5% on the one side within a few days.
