Hi all,

My name is Rachel and I am 49 years old. I am currently waiting to start a face to face course in sign language, as the job I do we get quite a few none hearing people who need our help and even if I can help them in a small way, this would mean so much. So whilst I am waiting to enrol on my course, I decided to enrol on this one, top give me a better understanding of BSL and it's importance.

I am a coda now in my 80s and live in Melbourne Australia. Learning a new language is reputedly beneficial as we age, for brain and heart. Dictating this note, and I will copy and paste into the BSL app.

I grew up with the equivalent of BSL, but have not used it for least 65 years. I am still very proficient with finger spelling, and practising or using it in a game environment would be an excellent test.

I would like to participate in the BSL fingerspelling game, but unfortunately it does not seem to register for me. I input my name, PeterA and then proceed with the test. I think that my score must be at least 60 for two minutes but it does not record a score stop it may be that it requires registration, but I cannot see where to register my name and personal details.

In my experience, so far as signing is concerned, unless the learner has almost daily access to a signing person for practice then it will be extremely difficult to become proficient or fluent, if at all.

    • Hey, i'm new here. I'm coming to the end of my level 1 course now ready to start level 2. I am aiming to go all the way to persue my drea career as an interpretor. I am hoping to find some people here that would like to practice, so that our signing can get to be the est it can be!
    • It's a bit late to reply, though I think Let's Sign BSL Dictionary is one of the more impressive sign dictionaries.  ASL has "The Gallaudet Children’s Dictionary of American Sign Language" and the ISL(Irish) dictionary includes the first page with the alphabet, the explains each further sign with the alphabet introduced on the first page.  A good dictionary can be a good book I think. I only just noticed no one had answered your question, so I thought I might.
    • Hi all, hoping that you are really well. I undertook a BSL course around 25 years ago. I now have a little boy who requires us to sign to help him with his day to day life. It's surprising how much is coming back to me and how much I enjoy it!. Hoping that today is a good day for you :)
    • It's great that you're going BSL, I'm sure you'll find friends with it. I haven't had any real conversations in sign language, I only picked ISL because it looked fun.  I do hope to finish the last class in the next month.  Thank you for the encouragement. I actually find Braille more testable since those I know aren't too interested in sign.  Braille is quite fun now with the different English and universal ones to learn, grade 1, 2, 3, UEB, math, and music.  It's nice to read dual te
    • Hey! What a lovely email to receive:)Thank you. I did do a short course in NZSL but it is obviously very similar to Auslan so I thought BSL users are a much larger community so went that way instead! I would encourage you to learn more ISL ( perhaps assuming wrongly you mean Irish Sign Language?) such a wonderful skill to have signed languages.  Thanks for contacting me:). Emma.
    • My name is Mary and I am based in Nottingham. Working in the healthcare means i interact with people with hearing impairment and so learning BSL will help me to effectively communicate with people within the Deaf community.
