I started the British sign language course a while ago to refresh my knowledge, as originally learnt BSL nearly 20 years ago. I am now recapping it before trying to complete it.

I was inspired to return after watching Rose Ayling-Ellis when she was teaching older people in a retirement village. And knew how great the language is.

It reminded me of when I spent time with a local Deaf community eating Pizza and chatting. Lemonade went over me due to vigorous signing. As very emotional and Deaf sign users more Italian in a way with how passionate they get when talking. I just laughed about the Lemonade. As just one of the things that can occur. As a hearing person I felt very accepted and included.

I also went to Bristol for a silence is golden weekend. And we had to practice signing in lessons. Then go into Bristol seeing the sights order food and drink all in BSL. All food times etc was all in BSL so immersive. Better than going to Deaf club as most times I went they had topic discussions and hearing guest speakers. So interpreter present. Much better to not hear an interpreter when trying to really learn a language.

I think once get my confidence back up I may find a local Deaf community again. I know at my local College they did do a sign cafe. I am a youth worker so could go there. And did for a little while volunteer in a Deaf/hearing youth club. Mostly Deaf young people.

    • Hello. I am deaf with CI - I use bsl where I can. I wanted to use Fingerspeller on the bottom of my work email for my name - please can anyone tell me who I get permission from to use this on work email or if have to pay to use on public/work email? Thank you
    • Back learning BSL after a very long break, learning it as I am a Support Worker and a guy I support is Deaf, not only that but I’d like to be more inclusive with my communication and I’m hoping long term to become an Art Psycotherapist so it would be useful for ensuring people use their choice of communication. Am keen to learn more:)
    • Hi all, I used to be proficient at BSL, but that was 30+ years ago. Then I moved to the States and became proficient in ASL. Now I am back here, living in Scotland, and I have to retrain my brain for BSL. Here's hoping!
    • Hello,  Nice to meet you all. My name is Jasmine and I have recently started to learn BSL. I wanted to see if I could learn a language based on muscle memory because I used to play piano and also wanted to pick up another skill. Since starting two or three weeks ago, it's the happiest I've ever been. There is something so fulfilling about learning BSL and I can't wait to get better. I am excited to be on this journey and hopefully use this new language one day.
    • Hi Chris . Very jealous that you are at Preston doing the degree . I so wanted to do this when I was younger. I hope you enjoy the course and succeed in pursuing a career in Deaf awareness and language.
    • I really hope that you will find the course useful.  It cannot be easy for you but communication is so important and I can truly appreciate why you want to do this i really hope that it helps you ..Good luck .
    • Hi my name is Trevlin I live in NorthWest England . I am deaf myself since age 3  from measles damage but have wanted to involve myself in deaf /Deaf culture and language for a long time. I  hoped in my younger years  to study a Uclan to do the deaf studies degree but that didn't happen. I am now studying level one sign language at college and love it but as I'm now in my 70th decade I may have left it to late .  I would love to know any other potential signers and see how people are going on .I'm enjoying this course as an add on to college in an attempt to keep the grey cells firing .
    • Hi everyone! A little about me is that I have a neurological condition, Hemiplegic Migraines, that can take away my ability to speak for days at a time and for the past few years I've struggled to communicate in any other possible way; text to speech apps (which is time comsuming),just accepting that I have to have someone guess what im trying to say, etc. So I decided to try learning BSL in the hope that I can at least communicate more directly. Hopefully it'll be more effective and efficient way of communicating during my HM attacks.
