Hello from Michael in Surrey - learning BSL for work

Recommended Posts

Hi Michael,

I've found that doing the finger spelling challenge a few times each day has helped me to increase my scores. I can also touch type, which really helps.

All the best with your applications for work in the care sector.

Melanie

Hi Michael.  I got about 19 about 4 to 5 months ago; I've gradually increased the speed I set when I start, and current score is about 30, so like Willow says, just keep practising...  I'm doing  a part time course, and watching quite a few videos, so it isn't just this site. I can get higher scores if i type as i see each letter, but my comprehension is better if I wait for the whole word, then type - so that's what I'm doing.

I have been inspired to do this recently by watching some television dramas that have had members of the d/Deaf community using BSL. I also have some hearing loss and feel that it would be useful to learn some BSL to help with communication.
    • I have always been interested in learning BSL, having taught myself the finger spelling signs when I was about 10 years old from my mum's old nursing sign language book. I have currently just finished my first year of a masters in Speech and Language Therapy which has reignited my interest. I hope to have, at the very least, a base level knowledge of BSL when going into an SLT role in the future to be able to support my communication with prospective clients / patients.
    • The topic of relationships always resonates, especially when discussed in communities where people share personal experiences and try to be as sincere as possible. It is important that the conversation is not limited to stereotypes, but touches on real feelings, doubts and hopes. Finding the right person is not an easy task, especially if you have specific perceptions of the world or communication.
