Hi there👋

I just thought I'd drop in and mention that I joined a BSL Society that takes place in my university today. I came along to the drop in session and despite being quite nervous, I learned a thing or two and made a few friends. I recognised a lot of the beginner signing from the british-sign.co.uk course (level 1) I've been practicing.

A funny small difference I noticed was the regional dialect - being in Scotland there's a few minor differences in how to sign place names, etc than in England. It's been so fun and interesting to learn about!

    • Hi, I’m Eryn, a French student! I’m in the British section of my international school so I have a World Issues exam at the end of the year. I chose as the topic of my oral the public image of disabled people in Britain. There are a few reasons for this choice: a family member has a disability (not a hearing-related one) and I started learning BSL (I’m a complete newcomer).  So would anyone in Britain with a job involved with the production of media (e.g. editor, journalist, artist,...) engage in an email exchange with me? It’s only about answering a few questions or directing me toward helpful documents.  I would also really appreciate it if people living in Britain (therefore exposed to British media) could answer a quick survey (only 5 questions). Any help would be much appreciated!  Contact me via: [email protected]  Link to the survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdWGRHYdU_9LwlSI_fi_I6fmUCMPKVugldD6D3nH-wJnEbYuQ/viewform?usp=publish-editor

    • Hi everyone, my name is Alex and I am learning sign at the age of 10 so I can communicate with some deaf friends I have. I just want to thank the website for teaching me as I am a very unteachable person! sincerely, Alex
    • Hi all! I started losing my hearing about a year ago. I only have moderate hearing loss and use hearing aids so I don't really need to use BSL, but I thought it would be nice to learn anyway. I went from normal hearing to moderate in about 6 months, so learning BSL has helped me feel a bit more connected to my new found deafness. Any support is appreciated!
    • That's very thoughtful, all the best in your learning journey. 🙏👍
    • Hi Denise, how lovely. Hopefully you will make your workplace more inclusive, and make meaningful connections using BSL in the future 👍
    • Welcome to the forum, BSL is a beautiful language, how are you leaning? Online/face to face?  I find practicing in a classroom is very beneficial 👍
