Hi all, my name is Tayo and learn something new every month to keep me busy in a less rigid way than my usual STEM job and after doing a psychology course I’d like to learn BSL. I started a week ago but then I realised I’d need someone to practice onlinewith to accelerate my learning and maybe just allow me practice more as I’m doing this mainly because I want to be that person in the room able to mediate if there’s ever need for it and make sure people in the non hearing community feel included, as it’s not something taught in school(I believe it should be).

Hello there ️ my name is Roxana and I’m in London on Wednesdays and free from 4pm and would love to practice some BSL. I’m currently doing a BSL level one in Norfolk and want to practice!

Hello

I have just registered on Signature to guide me through my part time, Saturday morning BSL, L1 course. Most of the class is half my age and prefer to practice all over London and What's App. The college does not offer a year 2 buddy / peer support. We are advised to practice using YouTube or apps. But these tools do not offer reflective learning .

Does anyone know what difference between  the BSL Homework 1, 2 & 3 ?

All three BSL Homework are priced differently but the description suggest they offer the same

I may purchase the cheapest

Hi! My name is Kate & I've always been interested in BSL signing. I only ever got level 1 years ago. Over the years I've tried level 2 a few times but always bottled out before the exam. I'm looking for someone who I can practice with on a regular basis to gain my confidence. I would love to have a buddy who I feel comfy signing with. I hope someone may be willing to join me.

Hey Guys, Im in the middle of writing a Practice Partners webpage, which matches you by distance, would you be interested in this? meanwhile, you can always check out the Deaf Pub listings at deaf.mymentalwellness.uk
The site was originally intended to list unknown Mental Health services, but as time progressed, I started BSL 1, which was completed 3 weeks ago (having to resit 102 on the 9th June!!). so I am also looking for practice buddys. Check out the above website and... well, hope it helps.

Hi Kim, i'll be interested. I have posted a need for a BSL buddie, and the location/distance is an important part of being a buddie. I think we all need it to be convenient to meet and practice.

Hi. erm... so, the deaf.mymentalwellness.uk page, you dont have to log in for that, it should give you two buttons, pressing the deaf pub / resources will take you to deaf.mymentalwellness.uk/events.php This is up and running, I have 30 venues listed, adding more when I get time.

The bsl.mymentalwellness.uk page, im having to put in security measures for that page. This one you will have to log in, so the system can remember you and give you a distance based on postcodes. It will also have a block function as advised by my legal guys. The idea is to bring students L1/2/3/4/5/6 together with Native BSL Signers which will provide practice opportunities for the student, and social activities (Meetup for coffee) for the D/deaf person.
If your interested in helping test and give feedback, please message me privately and ill give you instructions on how to access the page.

Thanks
Kim

Hi! I'm in Wolverhampton & be nice to practice to gain some confidence with it. Always been fascinated with it but haven't had the opportunity to enjoy it.

Hi, ok, so the Goose hosts a D/deaf Pub, which appears to be a Thursday Evening (I'll put more info on my website when they approve my FB Joining). I highly recomment D/deaf Pubs and Clubs to attend, because you get to see BSL in the real world, where as other students will sign how the tutor has taught them and (in my case) not all tutors sign the same way, so real life experience can be a huge bonus.
(check out the website, just added the goose deaf pub info at deaf.mymentalwellness.uk)

Hey, so, https://bsl.mymentalwellness.uk is up and working, i have added another function. if you visit the profile page, then you can get reminders emailed to you, based on your location - postcode, how far you can travel and it will email you sunday night monday morning, telling you what events are in your location for the following 7 days which is the default.

the https://deaf.mymentalwellness.uk page is coming along too, im adding venues every day. I ensure there is a venue listed within 20 miles of each person who has registered. chances are, they will be a lot close than 20 miles, but if there arent any within that distance, ill try to add some

    • Hi there, I am Hannah-Mae and I am enjoying learning more sign language. I grew up with a partially deaf sister, and now my Dad is profoundly deaf. It always struck me how isolating the world still is for the deaf community. I unfortunately will be blind in a few years time but I know that both people's attitudes and modern living is much more accommodating of visual impairments than hearing ones. Because people don't see it they don't consider it. I work in communications for a charity, and am pushing for more sign language inclusion. All our videos have subtitles as standard but we can go further both on recorded and live events. I also am really behind BSL in the curriculum. Whilst I can still see I want to help make it so that the communities we live in are more inclusive.
    • try the three versions i sometimes see being used
    • Hi, got a slightly odd issue - I find that signing the number 3 very difficult because of my tendons. The sign I've learned in the online course i'm doing is the index, middle and ring finger up, thumb and pinky down. It is currently impossible for me to have my pinky finger go down without my ring finger also going down unless i use my thumb to hold my pinky finger down manually, and on my primary hand it is difficult for me to get my thumb to hold my pinky finger down for long and without hand pain both while i'm doing the sign and for an amount of time afterwards. Is it permissible to switch primary hands for a single sign? it's a lot easier to hold my pinky finger down with my secondary hand without pain. if not, is there another sign that's able to be used for 3? or am I ok to just do thumb + index + middle finger for 3 and the context will be enough to confirm for someone I'm signing 3?

    • Honestly, I can’t shake the feeling that learning stuff like fingerspelling works way better when you just turn it into a game. Trying to memorize hand shapes straight off a chart gets tedious pretty quick, low-key feels like homework. Interactive tech and screen time usually get a bad rap, but platforms like TruPlay kind of prove that wholesome, engaging games can actually make practicing stuff stick. I mean, if kids or even adults are gonna spend hours tapping a screen anyway, using that play-based format for sign language seems like a no-brainer
