Honestly, I can’t shake the feeling that learning stuff like fingerspelling works way better when you just turn it into a game. Trying to memorize hand shapes straight off a chart gets tedious pretty quick, low-key feels like homework. Interactive tech and screen time usually get a bad rap, but platforms like TruPlay kind of prove that wholesome, engaging games can actually make practicing stuff stick. I mean, if kids or even adults are gonna spend hours tapping a screen anyway, using that play-based format for sign language seems like a no-brainer

I work within a Learning Support Service in a College local to me. We occasionally get students with hearing impairments, and one or two have used BSL. Sheer frustration at not being able to communicate effectively with these students has led me to spend the Summer recess starting to learn BSL. I won't be expert by the time the students come back, but at least I might be able to have simple conversations with those who use BSL and develop my skills as I go along.

I’m learning BSL online with the Introduction to BSL course. I’ve always wanted to learn it (I’ve known fingerspelling since my teens). But since the documentary with Rose Ayling-Ellis, and taking to a fundraiser at Manchester Victoria, I think everyone should learn BSL. Some of my relatives and friends are slightly hard of hearing, my voice isn’t loud, and it can be hard to communicate in noisy environments. I don’t want to be left with no way of communicating when I’m old. And I want to make spaces like church more inclusive. So, if anyone has resources for signing worship songs, that would be great!
