Im 16 and currently in sixthform. learning bsl through a school club and an online course. My reasons for learning bsl are a bit different from most peoples, one of my freinds pitched an idea to me for us both to start learning bsl for a dungeons and dragons character concept where he is roleplaying a criminal who had their tongue cut off and can only comunicate to me through signs and writing. Im enjoying sign language much more than i thought i would and so want to get a bit more involved.

Hey! I'm 17 and also in sixthform - started learning at the beginning of the academic year but have literally made no progress whatsoever. If you want to chat or sign or something - I'm looking for a BSL partner.

As weird as it sounds, I totally get this. I'm not learning BSL for D&D purposes, but one of my best friends who I play with is pretty good at it. I thought it'd make an excellent version of Thieves Cant or even the Drow Hand Signal Language (which is, essentially, very similar to BSL!). I'd definitely considered using it in a character too :D

      Why I'm Learning BSL

      I'm learning BSL so I can communicate with my friend and others. It's outrageous that we were never taught this at school so that we can communicate with D/deaf people. I hope to surprise my friend next time I see them. I'm a little worried that I don't pick things up fairly quickly but hopefully I can start to have a conversation with them when I next see them.

      Hi I'm Ellie, I've just started learning sign language so I can communicate with a friend. I'm quite nervous that it will take me a while to pick things up but I'm ashamed we never learnt BSL in school and that I couldn't just communicate with my friend naturally.

      I'm learning BSL because I have hearing loss and tinnitus due to meneieres disease and my hearing getting worse.  I originally took a level 1 course 25+ years ago as I had a friend who was profoundly deaf and a BSL teacher. Unfortunately we lost touch, but now I'm learning again

      I'm autistic and, though I generally have little issue using spoken languages, I find myself looking for an alternative that might feel more comfortable and be more accessible to me during verbal shutdowns. Furthermore, BSL will allow me to connect with more people in the disabled community and other communities I am a part of, which I really value.
