I noticed this shirt online but do not recognize the second hand as the letter t. Is this an ironic mistake or am I missing something? New to ASL so wondering what the designer intended. See attached image from Amazon. Thanks in advance!

Good catch, it's likely a design mistake or an attempt at being artsy. ASL letters should be clear, and that one doesn't look like a proper "T." I’ve seen better ASL designs on shirts, like the ones from Sonoma Shirts, simple and accurate.

❤️ I have a feeling that someone asked Ai to create an image for a t-shirt with a sign language theme. Ai created an image and the individual just used the image without double checking if it actually makes sense. Haha

👉 Another option is that it might actually make sense to the actual creator of the shirt. Sign language isn't universal in every country. Heck, even handshapes aren't universal in every country.

For example, the "T" sign in ASL is a vulgar insult in countries like Russia and Indonesia.

Here's what Ai has to say about it:

=========

Handshapes can carry dramatically different meanings across cultures. The ASL sign for the letter T involves the thumb tucked between the index and middle fingers. In American Sign Language, it's simply a letter. But in Russian culture, that same gesture is known as the fig sign (called кукиш or шиш in Russian), and it’s considered rude or dismissive.

🇷🇺 Russian Meaning of the ASL "T" Handshape

- Gesture: Thumb tucked between index and middle fingers
- Russian term: Kukish or Shish
- Meaning: A vulgar refusal, equivalent to “You’re not getting anything” or “No way”
- Context: Used to deny a request, mock someone, or express defiance. Historically, it was even used to ward off evil spirits or bad luck.

So while ASL uses it neutrally for spelling, in Russia it’s a culturally loaded gesture. Definitely one to avoid flashing casually in Russian-speaking regions.

=========

❤️ Wow! Ward off evil spirits! haha Fascinating stuff. Have a beautiful day everyone! 👍

    • Hello,  my name is LaDonn and I have been learning ASL over the past few years.  I have taken some local classes which were extremely helpful and I love making new friends.  I also study on my own using ASL dictionaries, watching videos and recently teaming up with a fellow ASL classmate to practice when we can.  So, I was thrilled to find this site where I can actually video chat with other signers and practice with voice off.  The best way to learn is by doing.   I would love to meet both beginners like me and experienced signers, too.
    • Hi!  My name is Kendal, and I am a college student currently enrolled in ASL II. Unfortunately, online spaces are the only way I can immerse myself in the Deaf community, which is the main reason I decided to make my account. Now, onto the interview help... For my midterm project, I am required to conduct a brief interview with a deaf person. If there is anyone who fits my single criteria and is willing to participate, please let me know!
    • Hi, my name is Triceta. I am 30 years old. I am Deaf, I lost my hearing in 2023, but I have been signing for 13 years, I took ASL in highschool and just continued signing. I immersed myself in the deaf community, wanting to learn more and to practice the skills I had. Fast forward to 2020, I started having double ear infections and kept complaining of the pain, but nothing was ever done. By the time I saw a doctor who would listen to me and consulted with an ENT specialist, my hearing had already diminished in both ears.
    • Thank so much!
