Hi there! I am having trouble finding an online program that doesn’t require you to have an associates coming in. I found a school that said you need an associates or be able to pass a proficiency test.

The admissions counselor said “Some candidates will work with a registered interpreter on their own, like tutoring sessions, and attend Deaf community events and even use online resources in increase their skill base. They then will sit for the ASLPI. An ASLPI score of 2 or higher will verify your language proficiency and will allow admission.”

Has anyone on this forum done something like this? If so, I’d love any pointers you could give. I have completed ASL I-III as well as a few intro to interpreting classes but it was a few years ago and I’m happy to start from the beginning for a refresher. Thank you!

      Hi everyone! I'm a hearing husband with a deaf wife, and I'm a retired electrician and safety instructor. I know some sign language, but I'm hoping this site will help me improve my skills and support others in our local fire department. Although there aren't many deaf people in my community, I have many deaf friends from different places. We always have a great time together, and they're wonderfully patient while teaching me new signs! I'm excited to be here, learn more, and connect with everyone.       My name is Leah and I started learning ASL to help people communicate where there are language barriers. For instance: I just started volunteering at a nature center and I hope that one day I'll be able to help someone connect there. I'm also applying for a job at my local YMCA for the Member Services desk. It would be great to help the deaf and hard of hearing community connect there also. I'm very excited about learning ASL. I love helping people. 😊

      I am taking my first class of ASL at a local community college.   I am hearing.  The teacher is Deaf and fantastic.   The language is beautiful.   I am learning because I have 3 neuro-divergent kids and I think this would be a good way to connect with them.
