  1. Hi! I'm Alec, I'm 16 years old and going into my junior year of highschool. I am learning ASL and have been learning for almost 4 years. I am self taught, but I have been trying to look for a study partner to get experience and improve my receptivity. I can use discord or another social media to video chat, and I am in the Eastern Time Zone (United States). I'd like to study with someone who knows the basics but any skill level is fine with me
  2. I just joined this today. I am taking ASL 1 online for school, and I would like to practice my conversation skills and assignment topics if anyone is available anytime soon and would be willing to help me.
  3. In Josh Castille’s translation of satisfied from Hamilton, when the song says “is that right” at 3:11. I haven’t been able to find the sign. Pointer finger curling on the chest? Then at 3:53 he signs pointer finger under a flat palm? I can’t find either. I’m a first year student so I don’t know if these are basic signs? I’d appreciate anyone that could help!
  4. I am new to ASL. could someone help me translate a video?
  5. Hi there! I am having trouble finding an online program that doesn’t require you to have an associates coming in. I found a school that said you need an associates or be able to pass a proficiency test. The admissions counselor said “Some candidates will work with a registered interpreter on their own, like tutoring sessions, and attend Deaf community events and even use online resources in increase their skill base. They then will sit for the ASLPI. An ASLPI score of 2 or higher will verify your language proficiency and will allow admission.” Has anyone on this forum done something like this? If so, I’d love any pointers you could give. I have completed ASL I-III as well as a few intro to interpreting classes but it was a few years ago and I’m happy to start from the beginning for a refresher. Thank you!
  6. My husband (I'll call him Kethern) has severe hearing loss. It's getting worse; to the point that he doesn't hear speech or sounds very well (if at all). He has begun to isolate himself from me and people at work. I have started making different signs to him, like you, me, talk, drink, come here, look, stop, deaf (I don't know the HOH sign) and other simple words/signs. Some are from the ALS vocabulary, some are just ones that I have made up on my own. I have talked to him on several occasions about learning ALS, but he is resistant. When I start talking about it, he starts doing something else, turns away from me so that he can't see me or just plain old ignores me. He has accepted that he is HOH. As a matter of fact, he is helping me cope with my age related hearing loss. (It isn't too bad yet, only higher frequencies are hard to hear.) I want to be able to communicate with him again. To be able to talk to him after he has removed his aids. (Without them he is nearly deaf.) To talk to him across a room. To tell him about my day, to have him tell me about his day. Just to talk. I am very new to ASL. I know some of the finger spelling and a few of the signs, but most of what I use is made up. I want to learn. I want "Kethern" to learn. How do I learn? How do I get him to WANT to learn? Thanks for listening. CW
  7. I am meeting a big inspiration of mine soon who is deaf, does this make sense?
