Good afternoon. As many of us, I'm snooping around for online practice groups. Unfortunately zoom / online works ideally for many of us, but as Covid wanes and groups are ending in favor of in-person, we are eager to hear about new groups (beyond those currently offered on Meetup.com (most of us belong to the main groups on there already)). Sometimes opportunities are shared in smaller communities, so worth asking as our regular ones sadly decline. It can be tricky with time zone differences, but it can't hurt to ask! Looking for conversation / discussion (vs. games or classes), primarily intermediate and above (all levels are okay as well, as I'm happy to spread the word for anyone in the same boat). Thank you for any ideas, links, direction etc!

Looking for ASL Study buddy or conversation practice buddy
Jax94 posted a topic in ASL Practice Zone
Hi My name is Jax, hearing, and a year 1 college student. I’m based in CA, USA. I finished ASL 1 class back in Dec 2021, and recently started ASL 2. I’m looking for an ASL study or conversation practice buddy. I find that I need to work on memory recall when I’m in a conversation. We can video chat, or exchange conversations through videos similar to Snapchat format. I’m available on Snapchat, Instagram, fb messenger, Flipgrid, zoom, and skype. -
Hello, my name is Kleen, I am 23. I have two semesters left of my community college to receive my French Associate of Arts undergraduate degree in 2022. I study many languages including French (obviously), ASL, Japanese, Korean and am starting Mandarin this coming fall 2021. Languages are something I enjoy, including their cultures and would like to incorporate them into my life by finding friendships and partnerships with people alike. I am, in a way, desperate for a person near my age or a group who are open to helping each other with improving our signing since I am unable to find local gigs to meet people with the same interest. My ASL is still very basic and I have the most issue with forming sentences (verb, subject, adjective...what goes where) As friends, your job isn't to teach me, but to aid our development while enjoying the company of another. As learning partners, we may make mistakes as we improve our skills, but at least we can learn from it and move forward. I have Telegram amd Skype which works wonderfully with ASL chats.

Hellooo!! My name is Kai. I'm almost 15 & I use he/him pronouns. I am currently looking to make friends & practice buddies - I am learning ASL because I cannot always speak verbally due to my anxiety. I am a beginner, but I'm okay with chatting with anyone (14-16), whether you're a beginner or not! If you want to text me, contact me on zoom please!! I'l reply much faster & much more often than I will on here. (Just add [email protected] as a contact, that's me! I'll respond ASAP :D) BTW, I might host a videochat tonight at 6 PM EST! You'll be welcome to speak in ASL, English, or by using the text option. If you'll only be using ASL, please be prepared to also translate in the chat for people who aren't fluent. ^^;

Hello!! I will be hosting a zoom meeting for teens. In this videochat, we can all just chat and have a good time - and maybe even teach each other a thing or two! You may use english or ASL, but for either one you use - be prepared to type CC/translations in the chat for those who are Deaf, HOH - or not fluent in ASL. If you are interested please DM me on zoom, feel free to add me as a contact! ([email protected]) If you want to join the videochat, you must be a teenager. Anyone 18+ or -13 will be removed from the call. Please respect this, and do not join unless you are a teenager. This is for everyones comfort and safety! (I'm 14; turning 15 soon) This videochat will be monitored by my mother, although she will most likely be offscreen she will still be able to hear and see us. I look forward to chatting with you!!

I can start a practice group that we can all send messages to each other with. Mine is GAEHIWB. Add me and let me know that you're from this site and I'll add you to a practice group.

Hi all, I would like to practice asl more, but unfortunately I don’t have any friends that sign or are learning to sign. I know a lot of random vocabulary but I struggle with conversations because anything we did in class was scripted (because that’s helpful for the real world -_-). Overall, I’d say I’m probably intermediate. Anyone is welcome to add me on Glide, my username is itskait

Hi! My name is Maya. I have been learning ASL for a few years now but as we all know, if you don't use it, you lose it. I am always open to a friend to practice with although I am still not the best at signing. I am still actively taking classes so I hope to get better over the months!

My husband (I'll call him Kethern) has severe hearing loss. It's getting worse; to the point that he doesn't hear speech or sounds very well (if at all). He has begun to isolate himself from me and people at work. I have started making different signs to him, like you, me, talk, drink, come here, look, stop, deaf (I don't know the HOH sign) and other simple words/signs. Some are from the ALS vocabulary, some are just ones that I have made up on my own. I have talked to him on several occasions about learning ALS, but he is resistant. When I start talking about it, he starts doing something else, turns away from me so that he can't see me or just plain old ignores me. He has accepted that he is HOH. As a matter of fact, he is helping me cope with my age related hearing loss. (It isn't too bad yet, only higher frequencies are hard to hear.) I want to be able to communicate with him again. To be able to talk to him after he has removed his aids. (Without them he is nearly deaf.) To talk to him across a room. To tell him about my day, to have him tell me about his day. Just to talk. I am very new to ASL. I know some of the finger spelling and a few of the signs, but most of what I use is made up. I want to learn. I want "Kethern" to learn. How do I learn? How do I get him to WANT to learn? Thanks for listening. CW

Hey eveyrone! My name is Izabel, I am 18 and have learned ASL in highschool. I took all the way till' ASL 3 and I love it. But, unforunately my college doesn't have ASL classes and I'm afraid of losing all what I've learned, and I hope to be able to a fluent conversation if I ever come in contact with someone deaf or hard of hearing or a signer. It would be great if someone intermediate or advanced could practice with me, however I am open to help beginners. It would still be technically practicing, as long as I get sommething, I'll be happy! I'm not really on facebook anymore, so I'll try my best not to lag if you message me

Hello, My name is Nicki [ sign name]. I grew up signing PSE. I am HOH and raised in hearing community. My grandmother and her mother were deaf , but learned PSE and lip reading ( different times/ different culture). Working on my ASL syntax. My receptive is still very english,so sometimes I miss details when in conversation using fast ASL grammar. I am hoping to find practice partners. Blessings This is my hippo video ( have no Flash Player). https://www.hippovideo.io/video/play/sJZjcxpc2LJSE6DIoGzQ6A

My name is Hally and I am a student at the University of Kansas studying to be an american sign language interpreter. Hi all, I'm 58 and just started learning ASL this year. I hoping to prove that you can teach an old guy new tricks. I would love someone to practice signing with one or more people who also would like to practice. Please let me know if you are interested.

Hey guys! My name is Skylar, I am looking for people who are interested in practicing ASL. I am a first year ASL student; however, I learned ASL previously from a deaf friend. My dream is to become and interpreter or do anything regarding ASL. I am currently a Psychology major but as I progress more into my ASL class and meet more deaf people I realize how much I really want to change that and possibly switch schools. I love the language and want to perfect my techniques. Any one interested please message me. I would love to share practice and experiences. I have Skype and FT. I could also download Oovoo if that works for other people. Please just let me know. Thank you guys!!
