Hi everyone. I am currently in ASL 101.  I am 24 years old.  My non sign language classes have been keeping me so busy that my signing is being neglected, but that is what I want to put the most importance on. Right now I am not very confident in my signing or receptive ability and that is what I would like to work on. I really need work with my fingerspelling receptive skills and I need to get better at converting English sentences to ASL grammar structure. I am in the Eastern standard time zone and work at nights so I am often available during the day to chat or practice with anyone who might be interested. I can sign small, fragmented sentences that are not exactly proper ASL grammar so if anybody is interested in practicing together, that is my current skill level. I hope to meet some of you and practice sometime!

Hi Danielle,  I'd love to help.  It's good that you're on the East coast, because the "Gallaudet" standard has been compromised by "Mexican/Spanish" on the West coast.  I'm hearing, but translate for deaf patients at my local hospitals, quite regularly, and tutor PPCC (local Jr. College) students who are struggling.  You can contact me @ [email protected], or call me @ (757) 375-3923 and leave a message.  I also have several ads on Craigslist.org.    Let's talk.  Nana Dee.

Hi Nana Dee it's very nice to meet you, I am pleasantly surprised to read you tutor at PCCC, that's where I am taking my ASL classes. I would truly love the extra help if you have time availability during week days?

Hi Danielle, I don't tutor AT PPCC, but tutor lots of students From PPCC that are having problems.   The rest of my time I spend at Penrose Hosp. helping Dr.'s and nurses communicate with the deaf.  I'm available Mon - Thur, but we need to coordinate our times and meeting place.  I charge $40/hour.  Some of that time can be via Skype or other, but the most effective learning is done in person.  If that's acceptable to you, or if you have more questions, you can contact me at [email protected], or [email protected], or via the Sign Language Forum.

@Nana Dee I see, well I very much appreciate you offering your services! However I am more in search of people I may practice with, and not looking for a tutor at this time as it is outside of my financial capability. Thank you again and best of luck on here! :)

      ASL Research: Signing Participants Needed for Online Study

      Hi everyone! I am a graduate student at the University of California, Davis. I'm desperately looking for individuals who use ASL--especially interpreters--for a pilot study for my dissertation. If you have a spare moment, I would like to invite you to take this completely online research survey. Your contribution to this research will help neuroscientists learn more about how sign language is processed in the brain for those who use both a spoken and signed language. This research has been approved by the UC Davis IRB board. Below is some more information, and the link to the study: --- Study of Sign Language Processing:  What is the purpose of this study? By evaluating participant responses to this short, online experiment, we can get a better understanding of the neural mechanisms that are used to support sign language processing in the brain. Who can participate? We encourage anyone (even hearing parents or individuals who use ASL consistently) from anywhere in the US to participate. Eligible participants meet the following criteria: ·       Between 18-50 years of age. ·       Normal cognitive function. ·       Consistent use of American Sign Language. ·       Have normal or corrected-to-normal vision. ·       High school competency (9th grade) in reading English What does participation look like? This experiment is an approximately 20-minute online study, which should be taken on a laptop or computer. You will be presented with a consent form, a short background questionnaire, and then a decision task. You will see videos of a deaf person signing, then you will press a key on the keyboard in response.
