  2. I’m learning BSL as part of my Silver Duke of Edinburgh award
  3. Hi, I’m Isabelle and I’m currently learning sign language with an online course as part of my Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award
  4. Hello there ⭐️ my name is Roxana and I’m in London on Wednesdays and free from 4pm and would love to practice some BSL. I’m currently doing a BSL level one in Norfolk and want to practice!
  5. Greetings to all! My name is Wendy & I am a nurse. My mam is hard of hearing & has bilateral BAHA's. The BAHA's totally changed her life. Before they came along she would wear a hearing aid in both ears & she constantly had ear infection after infection. Her ENT specialist informed her that what little hearing she did have would be gone in a few years. He said to learn lip reading or BSL. She chose lip reading but didn't want to go on her own to the weekly sessions, so I accompanied her. That was 1992. Fast forward to 1996 & her ENT specialist told her about Bone Anchored Hearing Aids. The literally changed her life! So, I'm a nurse who can lip read but I wanted to learn some BSL so I could at least say to a hearing impaired patient "hello, my name is Wendy & I am a nurse". Thanks to this course I can do that now. It's a great course!

  7. Hello, I'm just starting on my BSL course journey. I'm wondering if there is relevance to which side of your body you might place a hand sign, or relevance to which direction you might move your hand? Having just started the course, I have the following questions from the Colour section, for example. 1: With the sign for "silver" - when your hands break from the "S" - does it matter if your dominant hand is the one going up or down? I see in the video that the dominant hand goes up, but does it matter? With this particular sign, it feels more natural for the dominant hand to go down for me - I am wondering if this would be confusing? 2: With the sign for "white", I see in the video that you make the sign on the same side of your chest as your hand. Can the sign be made with your dominant hand on the opposite side of your chest - or does this mean something else or would it be confusing? I almost find this sign awkward to do on the same side of my chest as my arm! 3: With the sign for "colour" - does it matter if you circle clockwise or anticlockwise? Thank you to anyone who might answer... it will help me to progress correctly 😁

  9. Learning BSL as part of a school thing for A Levels but mainly cuz I think its cool. I learned a little bit in the past but I was so young I could only just about remember how to fingerspell my name lol. Generally have a passion for languages, cultures and psychology so I'm excited to learn more about the Deaf community as well as the language itself.

  11. I'm learning BSL so I can communicate with my friend and others. It's outrageous that we were never taught this at school so that we can communicate with D/deaf people. I hope to surprise my friend next time I see them. I'm a little worried that I don't pick things up fairly quickly but hopefully I can start to have a conversation with them when I next see them.

    Hi!

Hi I'm Ellie, I've just started learning sign language so I can communicate with a friend. I'm quite nervous that it will take me a while to pick things up but I'm ashamed we never learnt BSL in school and that I couldn't just communicate with my friend naturally.
  13. I'm learning BSL because I have hearing loss and tinnitus due to meneieres disease and my hearing getting worse. I originally took a level 1 course 25+ years ago as I had a friend who was profoundly deaf and a BSL teacher. Unfortunately we lost touch, but now I'm learning again
  14. Hi, my name is Gareth and I'm new to this forum. Picking up learning BSL after taking a level 1 course 25+ years ago

    Hello

Hi!! ive been learning BSL since I was 11 and when I went to uni I thought there would be a BSL society.... there was not, so im here instead
  16. I'm autistic and, though I generally have little issue using spoken languages, I find myself looking for an alternative that might feel more comfortable and be more accessible to me during verbal shutdowns. Furthermore, BSL will allow me to connect with more people in the disabled community and other communities I am a part of, which I really value.
  17. Hello! My name is Rowan and I use he/him pronouns. I'm currently completing an introductory course to British sign language. I've been wanting to learn for a while so I'm very excited!
  18. I don’t know much just last week started. If you are ready we can arrange some time. It will be best .
  19. Of course, thank you.
  20. I’d be down, but I’m also a beginner so not sure how much help I can give 😅
  21. Hi everyone i am 17 and learning BSL. I have started learning sign language as I feel it was unfortunate for it not to be offered to anyone in secondary school. I have heard discussions of it being introduced which i believed to be unfortunately too late. I then decided I wanted to learn now. I believe it would be great to be able to communicate with more people. I currently do not know where to go to find someone to practice with in person. I feel like my want to potentially work in sports coaching it is important to be able to communicate with as many people as possible. I do also know that my Mom felt learning bsl to be important as she did attempt to start teaching me when I was little. Unfortunately that did not continue so I stopped and only knew the alphabet -lexi
  22. Hi, I'm Hayley. I've just recently started a BSL course. I remember learning the alphabet and a couple of basic words back in school years ago, and I've always wanted to learn. I have the time now, so I thought I would give it a go. I'm always keen to learn and I work in retail, so it may well come in handy to know a little at least! Whenever I've learned languages in the past, I've always been better at understanding it, rather than being able to actually speak it. So, hopefully, I can glean an understanding at least. Anyway, hello, everyone =]
  23. Hi, I'm a 69yo and just accepting I'm hard of hearing, more so lately. Most likely age-related but with recent deterioration, and life-long tinnitus. Had a lot of middle ear infections, mostly in childhood but in my 40's a month or so of severe conductive deafness following burst ear drums. For myself, while I am bit hard of hearing, it's seem unlikely I will become deaf and absolutely need BSL, but learning something of it now feels a kind of 'insurance' if it would become really useful - I'd not want to age into a degree of deafness that really impaired communication. Of course, that would mean friends & family would need BSL to communicate with me, but then with BSL I might avoid total verbal isolation . But, beyond my needs, BSL is an official UK language and hearing people able to use BSL could be a way for these communities to be in more contact. And - so far, BSL seems fun, indeed ingenious, with its own history. I had no idea, for example, that [I read] American Sign Language is more like European sign languages, as it derives more from French settlers - ie BSL, ASL (etc) are languages with their own long histories. And - yes, following that - I hope learning BSL will challenge and reduce my less than charitable audism - ie will be about increasing my abilities, not 'helping deaf people' (😳!!)
  24. Hi . I need buddy to practice. Is there anyone interested to join me

  26. Hi Batem4n! I learned the alphabet under 2 years ago, and retook the course properly a few months back. I absolutely love it.
  27. Hi I am new and just started learning. I need some guidance about the centres in London where I can meet up with people who are interested in learning and can do some practice. Many thanks and excuse for my language
  28. Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forum. I work as part of the Front of House Team in a theatre and I am interested in learning some sign language to be able to communicate more easily with the many members of the deaf community who come to the theatre. So far I am doing ok in the comfort of my own home but under pressure I get flustered. Does anyone else find the same problem? I think a lot is down to constant repetition and practice.
