I'm autistic and, though I generally have little issue using spoken languages, I find myself looking for an alternative that might feel more comfortable and be more accessible to me during verbal shutdowns. Furthermore, BSL will allow me to connect with more people in the disabled community and other communities I am a part of, which I really value.

Hi everyone i am 17 and learning BSL. I have started learning sign language as I feel it was unfortunate for it not to be offered to anyone in secondary school. I have heard discussions of it being introduced which i believed to be unfortunately too late. I then decided I wanted to learn now. I believe it would be great to be able to communicate with more people. I currently do not know where to go to find someone to practice with in person. I feel like my want to potentially work in sports coaching it is important to be able to communicate with as many people as possible. I do also know that my Mom felt learning bsl to be important as she did attempt to start teaching me when I was little. Unfortunately that did not continue so I stopped and only knew the alphabet -lexi

Hi, I'm Hayley. I've just recently started a BSL course. I remember learning the alphabet and a couple of basic words back in school years ago, and I've always wanted to learn. I have the time now, so I thought I would give it a go. I'm always keen to learn and I work in retail, so it may well come in handy to know a little at least! Whenever I've learned languages in the past, I've always been better at understanding it, rather than being able to actually speak it. So, hopefully, I can glean an understanding at least. Anyway, hello, everyone =]

Hi, I'm a 69yo and just accepting I'm hard of hearing, more so lately. Most likely age-related but with recent deterioration, and life-long tinnitus. Had a lot of middle ear infections, mostly in childhood but in my 40's a month or so of severe conductive deafness following burst ear drums. For myself, while I am bit hard of hearing, it's seem unlikely I will become deaf and absolutely need BSL, but learning something of it now feels a kind of 'insurance' if it would become really useful - I'd not want to age into a degree of deafness that really impaired communication. Of course, that would mean friends & family would need BSL to communicate with me, but then with BSL I might avoid total verbal isolation . But, beyond my needs, BSL is an official UK language and hearing people able to use BSL could be a way for these communities to be in more contact. And - so far, BSL seems fun, indeed ingenious, with its own history. I had no idea, for example, that [I read] American Sign Language is more like European sign languages, as it derives more from French settlers - ie BSL, ASL (etc) are languages with their own long histories. And - yes, following that - I hope learning BSL will challenge and reduce my less than charitable audism - ie will be about increasing my abilities, not 'helping deaf people' (π³!!)

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forum. I work as part of the Front of House Team in a theatre and I am interested in learning some sign language to be able to communicate more easily with the many members of the deaf community who come to the theatre. So far I am doing ok in the comfort of my own home but under pressure I get flustered. Does anyone else find the same problem? I think a lot is down to constant repetition and practice.

Hello everyone π I'm Layne. I am about to take my BSL202 and BSL203 at the start of next week π¬ I luckily passed BSL201 last week π I am based in India so it is tricky to find people to practice with. If anyone is up super early in the UK and looking for someone to converse with I am 5.5 hours ahead so will be around! Thank you π

Welcome to the forum, Katherine! It's great that you've decided to learn BSL! How long have you been learning for up to now?
-
Hello! My name is Katherine, I am a British-Mexican linguist, and am beginning to work as a part-time primary school teaching assistant. I also do a bit of English/Spanish translating and interpreting on the side. Growing up with 2 languages and 2 cultures, moving back and forth between countries, resulted in certain language and speech difficulties, making sign languages very attractive to me personally. I started learning Mexican sign language years ago but never continued, and upon resettling back here I am finally committed to learn sign language, and find BSL fascinating. I look forward to communicate in BSL with other students as well as within the deaf community, whom I'm very curious to meet. Cheers!
