  5. Hi everyone, I am excited to be learning sign language, it’s been something I have wanted to do for a long time, since my friend at school taught some small signs so we could play and get along. I have always tried to be a good communicator and recently have started my own business teaching children all about earth science using micro drones, I want to make sure the workshops I deliver are as inclusive as possible, and that I can connect and communicate with everyone. I look forward to learning from you all, and connecting to make learning as fun as possible!
  6. Good Afternoon, I am Stevie. I have started learning BSL to help those in my GP practise where I work. I want to make things more open to people and the community.

  8. Hiya I’m Tamsin, I’m autistic and I started learning BSL to better communicate with deaf people and neurodivergent people who rely on sign supported English, and to use myself to be able to communicate in situations where I’m too anxious/overstimulated to speak.
  9. Hello! Are there any online groups (ideally in the evening) where learners could practice signing?
  10. I am have just finished the introduction to BSL course on this site. I found it very useful and with a group of others, who I did either or both a Lipreading/ a different 10 weeks introduction to BSl face to face courses, we are practising the lessons together at a weekly meet up. We are currently focusing on lesson 3 and also recapping the others. We are having fun learning together and building our confidence.
  11. Hi My partner, Ken, and I, Jules, initially did a Lipreading course and then started learning BSL with ‘Amy of Smartsigns BSL’ in an introduction to 10 session course earlier this year. My partner’s hearing was gradually getting worse and he was feeling more and more isolated in social situations, so it seemed a good idea. More recently we decided, along with some of those on the Lipreading/ BSL Smartsigns courses, to do the course offered by this site and practice together so we would improve our skills further. Luckily Totnes Library allowed us space to meet and practice weekly. Still very much beginners, but enjoying the experience.

  15. Hello! Very new learner to BSL and really enjoying learning. I've started because I want to support myself and others communicate in this way.
  16. Hi I decided to learn BSL so I can communicate with deaf people better
  17. Hi I worked with deaf children and adults so want to learn BSL so I can communicate better
  18. Hi, introducing myself - my name is Sam, I'm very nearly 47 years old. I work with customers everyday and more and more am finding that we have hard of hearing or deaf customers who are coming into branch, who adapt brilliantly to our lack of skill of being unable to communicate with them. So I decided to challenge myself and my aging brain to learn something new and to learn BSL to try and make their experience in our branch a bit better.
  19. My name is Steve. I learned BSL at Level 2 at my local deaf centre many moons ago. When Signature was formerly known as the CACDP. YES! that long ago. I have decided that in my 6th decade that i want to learn BSL again. And have enrolled at a college to study BSL at Level 2 from scratch. And am looking forward to the challenge....BRING IT ON !! I am also in training to be a Counsellor and am currently at L4. The course that I am on requires me to source an organisation that will accept me on placement. Is there anywhere or anyone that could assist me on the procurement angle. Ideally so that i can develop my BSL and Counselling skills at the same time. Thank you for reading or glancing my intro. Hoping there's someone or organisation out there that can assist / help me. I am baaed in the North West and am willing to travel in respect of a counselling placement.
  20. How would I sign fascist or nazi?
  21. Welcome to the forum! It's great that you're trying to learn some BSL to differentiate your lessons. How long have you been learning up until now?
  22. Welcome to the forum! How long have you been learning until now?
  23. Hi! For this, personally, I would use "Sign (fingerspell word) what?" If you need a video I can attach one
  24. for sibling it's signed brother-sister in quick succession, so you could use that, or do "non-binary brother-sister" - and for offspring it is children, like patting the air down in front of you starting with your hands next to each other and patting outwards
  25. I've included a video to make it easier to see but here I sign "My partner (is) non-binary" - hope that helps! For they/them, you generally point at the person you are referencing, and just change the shape of your mouth for he/she/they
  26. I think orca is one of those that doesn't have a sign specifically, you could either fingerspell o-r-c-a or do "killer whale" - I can include a video of how I'd do that
  27. Hi! I have a non-binary partner and the bsl I learnt was your index and middle finger together, swipe them down your nose with a little flick at the end, whilst mouthing non binary
  28. I'm learning BSL for a multitude of reasons. I know some members of the deaf community, and would like to better communicate with them, and also I'm autistic, so me and my partner use sign to communicate when I go non-verbal.
  29. I am trying to learn BSL so that I have more understanding of what it might be like to be deaf in a very auditory world, mainly so that I can properly differentiate my lessons to the needs of a new student who has joined our school in September.
  30. IanR

    Hello

Hi, I'm Ian and I am a secondary school teacher. We have a Deaf person who has joined our school in September 2025 and I thought it would be useful to know BSL up to level 1. I am following an excellent course on www.british-sign.co.uk which is really helping me and, hopefully, will be of help to this student.
