Ā Hi everyone , My Names Vinnie 34 male from Dublin Ireland but living and working in the Uk for over 11 Years now. I'm learning BSL during lock downĀ as I've loads of time to spare and i cant get enough of it.Ā I already speak French and I was looking to add another language to my pile. I chose BSLĀ for a number of reasons, I did know a bit of ISL (Irish sign language) but had no needs for it being in the UK, as IĀ now class the UK as my home soĀ it's BSL time.

Ā I work in Airline industry and I'veĀ had a number of encounters with deaf people which kinda embarrassed me for not knowing how to at leastĀ communicate in the most basic of manners. This is my main reason for wanting to learn it. I'm so open to meeting people from all walks of life and i would hate to miss out on meeting anyone just because i didn'tĀ speak their language. I personally think Sign Language should be something we all learn in school, even if its just the basics.Ā 

I'm getting stuck in and learning as much as i can, online course. researching, trying to help my learning with sign-along songs etc some can be found on my tiktok @crackedupcrew.Ā  This really helped me with my muscle memory with signing. I'm still learning so there are Ā mistakes. I would love to meet other people who are learning, or Deaf people who want to communicate with the hearing community.Ā 

My goal is to be able to communicate with any deaf person and to learn about the deaf culture.

      Why am I learning BSL

      Good afternoon everyone, About 1 year ago I lost my hearing in one ear. I had no obvious reason to, but I left it 13 days hoping it would get better, I didnā€™t understand the need to get it checked out. Iā€™m have an MRI this week so I will find out why. After lots of meds and checkups, some hearing has returned. In the last year, Ā Iā€™ve had to adjust and Ā I catch myself having to lip read more and my other ear is working overtime. Ā I even catch myself using my hands for communicating more. This course is to help me , but also my job, as I never even considered before that I could use elements of BSL in veterinary medicine. Iā€™m a registered veterinary nurse and we get dogs and cats with hearing loss or pre/ post TECA surgeries. I use BSL on my cat, even though she can hear. Ā Just a simple movement or action and she knows where to go/ what it means. (She is having to wear a lot of bells so I can hear her.)So itā€™s for the animals too.Ā

      No one in my personal life uses BSL at this stage, so there isn't really a personal reason I would need to learn the language. However, as a physically disabled person in my 20s, I've become aware of how many accessibility flaws there are in modern society and I generally do what I can to keep myself educated on things like this whether it is applicable to me or not. One example of how I can do this is to be the one person in the room who is able to communicate with a Deaf person without needing to break out the pens and paper or notes app on a phone, and instead be able to speak in their primary language. I am of the opinion that BSL should be taught in all British schools, but until that time, I will do what I can now to be the difference I and so many others wish to see.

      Hi! My name is River and I have recently started learning BSL. I found this forum via the BSL learning website I've been using and wanted to introduce myself. I find I retain the signs I learn best when I'm actually able to talk to someone in BSL but don't know anyone in my personal life who actually uses the language. I'm hoping by being on this forum I'll be able to learn more about the Deaf community and might even be able to have conversations with people via video once I'm at a stage where I have any chance of understanding what's being said (I'm a complete beginner right now and would basically be guessing with context clues). Thanks for reading! I hope to be active on here again soon!

      Hiya guys! My name is Alex and Iā€™m 22 years old. I am not part of the Deaf community, however I work in a charity shop where we sometimes get customers who use sign to communicate. I love having a chat with everyone who comes through the door, and I donā€™t want anybody to feel left out of that, so Iā€™ve just started an online BSL course so I can connect with my community more. Iā€™m super excited to learn more!

      Hello, Martin! I am currently taking up a course which I paid for 3Ā£, it's in british-sign co uk. It's a nice course. It is great for goal-oriented type of learners. You get 2 years of access and a certificate. You can do assessments there. Goodluck on your journey! And it's nice to know that stories like this exist, makes me wanna tear up.Ā šŸ˜
