Heyy,

So I'm practicing my Level 1 words and phrases and finding it hard not to just sign lots of mini sentences e.g. My name is Ellie. I am 24 years old. I have 2 brothers. My brother is called.." etc. Are there signs for words such as "and", "but", "because", "so" etc. so I can sign longer continuous sentences...? Without a word such as "and" I don't understand how you say more than just lots of short phrases and sentences. I was practicing earlier siging "My favourite colour is Blue" and then i wanted to go on and say more about myself or say "My favourite colours are Blue and green"...?

Can anyone help?

TIA!

xx

Hi Ellie,

BSL grammar is a little different, conjuctions are used, but you find BSL the sentence structure is different. I struggle to explain it. For example, you say name me ….brothers, me have 3...please anyone correct me if I am wrong.

Use https://www.signbsl.com

They have a library of words

I mixed up the above sign for sign/words...I used finger spelling instead. I wanted to say BSL grammar is different compared to English.

    • My interest came from BSL module in uni (student paramedic) and I wanted to build on my knowledge so that I would be able to communicate with patients in the future. I also love chatting to strangers and I want to be able to do that with people who sign to!!
    • I work in commercial aviation as Senior Cabin Crew.   I wanted to learn Sign Language as we carry an increasing number of persons who identify as deaf, and I think it is an invaluable skill to have from a communication point of view. Although we have ASL and BSL capabilities via electronic QR codes on board, the ability to provide that personal and human interaction is equally important.
    • I work in research and want to learn BSL to enable more inclusivity within this field. I work with many different communities and find that the deaf community is too often overlooked. I want to address this and hopefully learn a lot myself and maybe gain some new friends.
