Hello, my name is Will.

I am a teaching assistant, living in London (I noticed that quite a lot of people here work in schools, which is great!). I've always wanted to learn another language before I have children so I can raise them bilingually and I've tried spoken languages and it's always been pretty unsuccessful (my fault I guess). I became interested in BSL a while ago and when the pandemic struck and I was put on furlough I figured now was a good time to try and learn properly.

Part of my interest is to do with making myself more employable as an SEN Teaching Assistant but mostly I am interested in meeting a new community of people and learning to communicate with them  all the facial expressiveness, mental speed and dexterity required for BSL take me right out of my comfort zone and I think it's important to push your boundaries, especially if it helps you meet new interesting people.

My hobbies including partner dancing (something I would like to become a job one day), writing and outdoor activities or various types.

With BSL, I struggle to motivate myself to keep on it but I'm just about hanging in there, although my progress is slow.

It's nice to meet you all.

Hey another school worker!

Pretty much similar to your scenario. I had some CPD and thought this would be a great time to learn a new skill and see how some students feel in class

I might try to incorporate BSL in SEN department as well

    • Hi there! I'm Laila and I've just started a beginners course in BSL. I work in a nursery as a senco and one to one currently but hoping to move on to a different job role in a special school or a school setting. I've been fascinated by BSL for years now and I've finally decided to take the leap and start a course so here we are! I am already level 1, 2, 3 and soon to be level 4 trained in makaton in the new year but ive always loved watching people use BSL and even though I'm not deaf i still plan on signing as i speak to myself to ensure i dont forget any of it and i just find it fun to do anyway! I am a little suspicious of my hearing anyway as it isnt the best and i do have moments where i lose hearing in one of my ears for a few minutes at a time the longest being an hour and sometimes in both ears together so I'm looking into that but im so excited to finally be a BSL user and join this community
