Introduce Yourself - from BLS course

Hi,

I am mum to an 18 month old who has bilateral hearing loss so this is the main reason for learning BSL in order to allow us a way of communicating when she doesn't have her aids in.

Apart from being mum I am a neonatal nurse in NICU, so although it doesn't directly help my job it certainly will make things easier if we have any deaf parents in the unit.

Hi everyone,

My name is Jess and I'm 15, i always wanted to learn BSL and my friends have been learning too. I thought that during lockdown, it would be the best time to take the course online. I won't lie, I'm not very good, I can sign the basic things like 'thank you' and i can sign numbers, but I really wanted to learn and be able to communicate with the deaf community through BSL. I aim to finish the course and use BSL more when communicating with people.

Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone.

Nice to meet you all. There's such an interesting range of people here. At the moment I am overseas working as an assistant professor but I'll be coming back to the UK in the summer and I want to be able to communicate with any deaf people that I meet.

Hey everyone! I'm Lydia.

I'm very new to BSL too, my main reason for starting is that I'm a paediatric nurse and some of the children I look after use BSL so it will be beneficial and useful to be able to communicate through BSL to the child rather than talking to the parents.

How's everyone finding it at the minute?

    • Hi, I have joined BSL as I am retiring very soon from Special needs teaching. I have used Makaton signing in my classroom for many years but would like to be able to sign to more people. I also think it will be good for stimulating my brain and I have already become very competitive with myself playing the spelling game!!
    • Ive just started to learn how to use BSL and I managed to use fingerspelling to get a message to someone when I wasn't able to speak to them. I am so Glad I started this course I think that it will really help me with my career path in the future.

    • Hi everyone, I was keen to learn BSL as I am on a career break from a job in IT and am very interested in how i can help people with listening difficulties learn / understand how IT may be a great place to work, seek a career. where there are lots of vacancies / opportunities..
    • Hi to all BSL learners, I have decided to learn BSL because as part of my role in healthcare I communicate with a variety of patients and think it will be a good skill to have.  Also my mother and mother-in-law is starting to have problem with their hearing... And I would like to have this skill to help them if they need to learn BSL in the future.
    • My name is Julia. I am learning BSL because I am losing my hearing.  I have no hearing in my left ear now due to an acoustic neuroma and I have inherited otosclerosis from my mother's side of the family and I now have very little hearing in my right ear.  I also attend a lipreading class. I did start to learn BSL a few years ago but did not persevere! I am restarting my journey with it and must make sure that I practice, practice, practice!!
