Hi!

Hello,

I am Mair.

Just a beginner at BSL but enjoying it....I am probably terrible at this but practice makes perfect I am sure!  Thought I'd post a little attempt at an intro (Mostly because when the BSL course said to introduce yourself I assumed it meant in BSL but I can see from everyone else it probably didn't....thought I'd set myself the challenge anyway!!)

I welcome feedback (But please don't just be like 'hey you're rubbish!!! - I am trying to learn and am brand new at it so anything I could do better or need to think about would be great!).

I am well aware I am not very good at this yet but it's like my first few days of trying to learn around other work so I think I'll get it soon!

About me...I work for a charity doing admin and also working with vulnerable families and children.

I actually learn't the BSL alphabet in 1996 when I was 17 and didn't know I remembered it until recently!

As I learn best by doing things and work well with my hands it seems that this is perfect for me because I can do it to learn it!

🙂

Happy 2021!

so after like 8 attempts of making a video and laughing at myself every time the audio has worked and the visual hasn't for some reason - so I don't know if it will post - if not sorry!

Hi Mair,

Not sure if you have received this message so sending again. ;)  I too had trouble with the video to start with. Sometimes it is the site. However if it is not this might help.

Click on the red button. When this changes to a blue square start to record your message. Click on the blue square to stop recording. Click on INSERT. Wait a couple of minutes until your video pops back on. Play and check it is what you want to send. press SUBMIT. good luck

    • I once witnessed a situation in a clinic where a deaf-mute man was trying to explain what was hurting him, but the staff simply did not understand him. It was awkward and offensive to watch a person in a stressful situation left without help just because there was no necessary communication channel. Since then, I have become more interested in how medical support for people with hearing impairments is organized. It turned out that there are websites and services, such as FMRQ customer service ,
    • hello my name is Claire, I have only just started BSL. i have always wanted to learn but only now realised you can do little bits online. if anyone has any tips for learning and practising that would be great. I'm also trying to get my family involved when it comes to learning. we had to learn little bits when my child was diagnosed with a speech disorder but it didn't go into as much depth as this , it was more for favourite toys and snacks and drink.
    • I am a teacher working in London. I have wanted to learn BSL for years but have finally got around to starting an online course. There are a number of deaf students in my school and I feel like it is an excellent skill to have. So far I’m finding it a bit of a challenge but really fun! I’ve started following a few BSL Instagram influencers too and try and practice every day. Looking forward to learning more! Any recommendations very welcome!

    • The sign for midwife in BSL shows assisting birth (palms facing up, moving down from waist). If you want midwifery services, I'd recommend contacting practitioners directly to discuss their communication approach – many are wonderfully accommodating!
